"Sheer weight of traffic"

by cheeryoleary » 02 May 2008 11:42

Can you possibly explain what this means?

"The traffic on the M4 at Slough has bunched up due to the sheer weight of traffic"

I thought the BBC had a clear English policy?

Why not just say "The traffic on the M4 at Slough has bunched up due to traffic"

Why do you have to pad it out? It doesn't add and additional information to the traffic bulletin.

Bastards.

What does 'bunched up' mean? :)

They're all just expressions. Calm down Keith.

Have you ever read the brilliant football lexicon packed full of all the phrases and cliches we all use when talking about the (you know what) game.

Okay, can't you mix it up a little....

"The traffic on the M4 at Slough has bunched up due to you silly feckers all deciding to live in the most populated region in the UK."

Or there are delays near Slough due to the 50 year old woman that is too terrified to move back into the correct lane.

Phrases that get me are, putting the ball into the mixer, surely they get it into the penalty box?

PPS shirley it is sheer wait of traffic?

"The traffic on the M4 at Slough has bunched up due to the sheer weight of traffic. This has been further exacerbated by the fact that some feckers were driving too close to the cars in front of them thus needing to brake harder than should have been necessary which quickly caused a concertina effect that resulted in the 1500 cars immediately behind them having to brake to a complete halt. That will now take 3 hours to completely clear, by which time, because it's a Bank Holiday weekend another load of feckers will have done the same thing, and then another load and so on. We expect the M4 to be free-flowing again in about 18 hours."

Is that any better?

How about......... "It's busy" rather than filling the air with guff? The Traffic RDS often cuts out halfway through the bulletin because whoever doing the piece is waffling.
I tell you what.... Get me in there. I could do a proper job. Fair enough, I know fcuk-all about journo broadcasting however I would be able to explain to people that the M4 on a Monday morning might (just might, mind you) be rather busy.

We could be a double act. I could do the weather.

"There is a chance of showers this morning, but it might also be dry. It will be light this morning, getting darker at night."

Cheery - So how would you report delays due to a protester with a placard drawing attention to themselves at a busy crossroads?

Does it include the phrase "drop zone"?

Anyone who uses this hideous American terminology to describe relegation positions is a cnut.
