Former Reading strikers

by marcusopp » 08 Sep 2013 20:23

Is it me, or do our sold (to 'lesser clubs') or released forwards seem to somehow outgrow us?
We released David Mooney a few years back having never given the lad a chance. He's one of the top scorers in league one at the mo. The same happened with Darius Henderson and Simon Cox.
I'd bet the management would love one of those guys back...

What a load of rubbish.

Mooney finally scoring a goal or two in the third tier is not outgrowing us.
Simon Cox scoring 30 in the third tier before disappearing in a Premier League squad is not outgrowing us.
Daring Henderson spending more or less his whole career in the Championship is not outgrowing us.

Give me a proper example of a striker 'outgrowing' us...

Whilst I agree with some of the younger strikers we let go when they were indeed youngster like Austin and Cox. But the choice to let them go were made with the knowledge of them at their tender age. They left, got game time and improved. Who's to say if we kept Austin and let Church go, we might have bemoaned that decision as Churchy may have come good, and Austin floundered in the reserves.

However I disagree with the main statement of the OS.

I actually believe our strikers never really recaptured the form they had with us. Kitson, Lita, even Doyle whilst playing regularly for Wolves never recaptured the excellent form he had with us. We had them in the peaks of their careers and thanks to Nick Hammond, made a lot of money for the club and kept us competitive in the championship.
