Mad Stad atmosphere rated 2nd worst in league

The atmosphere at Madejski Stadium has been rated as one of the worst in the Championship.

The Reading FC ground is better than only one other in the division - Bolton's Macron Stadium.

Location rated as the worst

"One commenter recently wrote: "Location is near a retail park but still out of the way from anywhere else, so quite a bad location in my opinion as to find a shop that sold alcohol we had to walk about 20 minutes away from the ground."

I've always thought the atmosphere was bad, but then I don't go to too many away games so i've not got much to compare it to.

Can't say this has come as much of a surprise.

As mentioned above out of town for away fans, the amount of away fans I see wondering around the ground looking for somewhere to drink. Saying that the outside bar area near the Jazz is good enough on a nice day. Atmosphere isn't great at the stadium so that probably doesn't help.

Saying that hopefully with all the REP development they put something there for home/away fans to go

The atmosphere reflects what is happening on the pitch.

Some valid comments about the vocal support coming from Y25 and basically how its bad for the atmosphere. But ive been saying that since day 1.

Wake up and move.

Definitely think this is true.

Reading fans are generally passive, very reactionary, unlike clubs who create an atmosphere regardless. It's a shame because we can create a good atmosphere. We all saw the Fulham semi, and what Reading fans are capable of when they're motivated.

Debate on Twitter about having a drummer in Y26. Having seen what having a drummer had done to Huddersfield's support, I think it's a great idea personally.

It is all true and a fair analysis.

We are never going to have an "electric" atmosphere at home, geography and demographic dictate that. The quicker certain sections recognise things will not change and stop trying to come up with ridiculous ideas to "make it louder" or "improve atmosphere" the better!

If you do not like it then go elsewhere. Simple.

It was the same last season and we came 3rd. Your point is invalid.

How sad are some people to base their ground rating on how far they have to walk to get alcohol

Not really. Yes we came 3rd but the entertainment value was pretty much as low as it is this season. It 'reflects what is happening on the pitch' does not, necessarily, mean what is happening in the league table. We could go on a winning streak now and the atmosphere may not improve if the entertainment quotient stats low.

I wonder if there is a connection between difficulty of getting a drink before the game and lack of atmosphere?

I blame DJ Mega Party for not getting the crowd going as much. Maybe we should bring back Insomnia as a pre match track.

Also this comment on GR nails it:

Another fan said: "I did find it interesting that the majority of Reading fans who sung sat in the side stand by the away fans, which suggests that they intend to goad the away fans instead of supporting their team.

Ive often said that at times the "support" is more focussed on away fan goading than noise and actual support. Eg after a goal for us there's more attention on the away fans than on the team who've just scored.

Transport and location may be less of an issue when we finally get green park train station. Better than relying only on buses

Not to mention REP will make a massive difference.

Atmosphere is poor but I've been to tons of other home grounds where it's been equally terrible.

Maybe away fans are swayed by the general match day experience. Fulham is a excellent day out and the stadium has a lot of character.

I have said this before but it really is no worse than a lot of grounds. I went Arsenal Bournemouth god it was like a church they have to start waving flags to wake the crowd up. The atmosphere against Millwall in the cup was brilliant and there was only 7k there. That was unreserved seating.
