John Smithhandbags_harris Ok, outing myself here. I'm one of the protagonists of this group. Far from the main one, but one of the original half dozen or so who discussed the idea. And I'm in there on Saturday, hopefully with around 150 others. You won't see me in any of the PNE photos because I wasn't there despite wanting to be, instead I'd already booked flights to Munich for that day and was slumming it with the old man.
Let's be brutally honest, people can't be happy with the way things were going at RFC, with crowds displaying less life than a cemetery and performances utterly uninspiring. The half dozen of us who kicked this all off weren't happy so we decided to do something about it. We were sick to the back teeth of turning up, watching football, and going home. We want to offer more, and bearing in mind we all sit in different areas of the ground, we also feel there are many people looking to get behind the team but not feeling able to do so for fear of lack of "backing" from others, so we decided to try to give them somewhere they could potentially do just that.
It has to be stressed that this is entirely fan-led. The club aren't coming up with any of the ideas with this, they're simply supporting in any way they can, and that also means that they are willing to consider only having 2.3k away supporters - their attitude is very much RFC first. The idea was that it grew organically, with the first happenings for PNE not advertised so as to make people talk, we had the publicity we desired first time around and have started to spread the message and now it's time to build a contingent if we can.
We're not daft enough the think everybody's going to love it, particularly with such small numbers to begin with. Even with larger numbers it won't be everybody's cup of tea, that's personal choice and nobody within this group is going to criticise that but whatever happens we'll be doing everything we can to make sure it's here to stay in order to provide a more positive and vibrant atmosphere that other areas of the stadium will hopefully feed off. Yes, that includes Y24/25/26 who haven't done the job for ages now, so it's time to try something different.
Lastly, just a quick word on the "attention-seeking" element. The thing to remember is the group is predominantly youthful, enthusiastic, social media-engaged supporters who didn't necessarily want to sit in the Y25 area but who wanted to get involved. It was always going to take a group who didn't give a f**k because the contingent was so small first time around and yes, I'd agree to an extent it looks a little inadequate, but the larger the group becomes the better and noisier it becomes. All I'd say is support what we're trying to do even if you don't want to get involved. You have to start from somewhere...
It's absolutely terrible. Maybe do it outside the ground for the remaining games this season so we don't have to be embarrassed by you.
A megaphone! Honestly...
