It's my fault for not giving that much of a shit about top flight football generally but I was quite impressed that Southgate, in a world cup year, is picking a player I have literally never heard of

England U-17 2 1 Italy U-17.

Almost 8000 in a sun drenched Bescott watched a stereotypical game of two halves. With none of the players that won the U-17 world cup, England struggled for the first half. Italy looked more composed, more cynical and played with much more nous.

Second half, though, was great fun from an England point of view. Appiah's goal was very well taken, they created at least three or four absolutely golden chances and ran out deserved winners. Two other players I noted - right back, Crowe, very composed and striker/attacking mid, Duncan, combative.

Joe Gomez joins Oxlade-Chamberlain on the list of those to miss out on the WC due to injury.

No, you're right Liverpool's defense is water-tight

Not a huge amount of difference between them overall

One on one I can't really rem Smalling being beaten, it's his positioning that is suspect ( wrong side of Kompany for example).

Gomez offers much more in terms of 'attacking/bringing the ball out' but he's only played 28 games at the top level since 2015

I'm sure he'll become the 'next Baresi' whilst sat on the treatment table watching Stones et al conspire to get us elimin8d

Gomez was a player that Southgate looked to be very interested in taking, and is one that fits in with the way he is looking to play. That's the point really.

Without Gomez it means Walker is probably a step closer to playing as one of the 3 centre backs with Trippier, or Alexander-Arnold, on the right. Personally I'd rather see Walker on the right, especially as and when we play the stronger sides.

Would personally go:

Pickford

Walker
Maguire
Stones
Bertrand

Henderson
Milner
Alli
Sterling
Rashford

Kane

I know Milner retired from international football but he is in great form and I think if Southgate promised him starts he would take him up on it.

I think he's already been sounded out and said no, at least I read/heard something along those lines last week.

I'd still favour a back 4, but it seems pretty clear that Southgate is going with a 3.

Really looking forward to the World Cup, the greatest sporting event in the world. I think Southgate deserves a lot of credit. he has been a breathe of fresh air for England.

My starting line up would look like this

Pickford
Trippier
Walker (really like his as a CB)
Stones
Maguire
Rose/Betrand

Henderson
Lingard
Alli
Sterling

Kane

with Henderson holding quite a disciplined role and sterling alli and lingard supporting Kane.

Southgate will be announcing his squad on the 16th. I think he's previously said he won't start with a larger group because of the distraction it causes before it gets whittled down to 23, so that means w'll know his final squad by the middle of next week.

  8. bertrand

  10. walker
  11. alexander-arnold
  12. maguire
  13. dier
  14. alli
  15. wilshere
  16. henderson
  17. lallana
  18. sterling
  19. loftus-cheek
  20. lingard
  21. vardy

Probably not far off, although I can’t see him taking Smalling to be honest.

You’ve also got 3 right backs (albeit Walker may be a centre back there) and only one left back. Danny Rose and/or Ashley Young will be on the plane for sure.

Massive and ballsy call by Southgate to leave Hart out there. His form has been awful but I would have thought for the experience he would have gone as 3rd choice,

Sounds like Wilshire is out, with Delph probably in if reports are correct.

Southgate can't take the risk with Wilshire, complete liability when it comes to fitness. He has had a really bad end to the season too, horribly out of form.
