John Smith I see caps are still being given out like proverbial confetti. I've also been chuckling away to myself after reading so many people calling for Jack Grealish to be called up to the squad!

Well, for starters none of the uncapped players have played yet, so that's not quite correct, and what else would you like to see Southgate do?

Should he call up very promising young players who have come through the system together and experienced international success, you know, like everyone has been asking England managers to do since Germany showed the way 10/15 years ago?

Perhaps you'd rather he called up a player with a international experience and a wealth of caps already, maybe someone like Theo Walcott or Ashley Young?

Call up to the squad =/= a cap, only if they play.

Who isn't deserving of a call up in the squad?

Hudson-Odoi? Done well for Chelsea in the Europa League and featured in the U-17 team that won their World Cup. I would think giving first team exposure to one of the most exciting youth prospects is a good thing and shouldn't be sneered at.

Rice? He was a shoe-in for a call up after declaring for England and has probably been West Ham's second best player after Anderson.

Hudson-Odoi?

He's play 8 senior games in his career.

EIGHT. WHOLE CAREER.

And?

If they are good enough, they are old enough.

Who would you call up instead?

He might've played more than 8 if he didn't have a stubborn club manager.

No he hasn't, he's made 19 appearances this season alone, scoring 4 goals and being pretty impressive at the same time.

Jadon Sancho hadn't played much more, if at all, at the time of his call up in October and he's looked like a very sensible call up with what he can add to the squad.

If there are pull-outs would much rather a manager pulls in young players who are likely to have a long term future around the squad (even if they are a bit low on minutes) rather than going back to old disguarded names.

Trent Alexander-Arnold another one who has had to pull out (yesterday) through injury. No further replacement called up as far as I've seen.

Interesting* question I heard put forward this week...

Where would this England team finish if they were in the Premier League.

I think they'd be in the top 4, but not quite good enough to challenge City and Liverpool for the title with the current goalkeeper and central midfield options.

They'd win the league. England would take a lot of good players from the top 4 sides leaving them short.

Delighted for Sterling. To beat the Czech Rupublic 5-0 is no mean feat.

Barkley really made a difference. Upped the tempo of the passing and drove forward well. They were very pedestrian that first 15-20 minutes.

England clearly the better side, but 5-0 was a bit flattering, a fair slice of fortune in several of the goals.

A good start to the campaign.
The result was very much built around those who are now established in the side, Henderson, Kane and Sterling.
The only downside was Walker showing us yet again what a terrible defender he is even against lesser sides but fortunately we have the young full-backs from Liverpool and Palace who are surely the future.

Sancho could actually be on the path to greatness in a way no-one British has been since Gascoigne.

Let’s hope he isn’t a complete and utter dickhead as well and can complete the journey.

It seems daft to say it but with the ridiculous amount of emerging / developing young talent at our disposal, we really should be favourites for the next 2 tournaments.

Sterling, Kane, Rashford, Sancho, Hudson-Odoi..... wow! No other country in the world except possibly France has the same depth of attacking talent.

Didn't watch the game but Henderson and Dier in midfield seems a bit shit

What do we have in the way of CB's and CM's coming through?

Seem a little light in that area

You may well be right but successful teams are not just a collection of individuals and whereas we seem to be producing quick forwards I don't see the keepers, central defenders and creative midfielders coming through at the same rate.

Good though to think in terms of England being a good attacking team when for much of our history we have been dour , hard-running sides lacking in creativity.

Dier deliberately kicked a couple of theirs (doesn't he always) but came off worse when one of theirs kicked him.
IMHO Henderson was our best performer on the night barring Sterling.
He has improved under Klopp and is now a driving force for both club and country showing much more vision than in his earlier years when he looked the archetypal English midfield plodder.

Unfortunately he has become a bit injury-prone of late.

I thought Sancho looked like your classic quality but overhyped starlet destined to be the enemy in two / three years time

Much the same as Ronaldo looked in his 1st 50 games for Man Utd.
