John Smith Ah.

Well now we've uncovered the (not so) closet Fulham fan on here. Does anyone actually support Reading on this Reading FC forum? What a joke.

Just a football fan really m9. I haven't been to a Reading match for two years.

TBF, you read this and think "who's really the loser here".

Fair play to him. If only I had the same attitude as him I wouldn't be this apoplectic.

M9, I haven't 'supported' Reading for years, if ever, I'm just a casual fan. Only really went regularly in at Elm Park, and then in League One at the Madejski.

He's commenting on general football John, don't think he has to go.

Can you stop doing that Italics thing please? It was funny when I did it but you are wearing it out now.

You were only able to keep up the act for 5 days DD/Kes. Good effort for you though.

Meanwhile, back on the topic of the thread...

There's some suggestion that Southgate may try a different formation this evening. The implication being that it'll be a flat back 4 with 3 upfront (Rashford, Kane and Sterling).

I've seen a few suggestions that that will also mean a midfield 3 of Dier, Henderson and Barkley. I'm not sure that works for me. I've never been a massive fan of Dier in midfield, especially alongside Henderson, so I'd probably rather see Winks alongside Henderson and Barkley.

What will be interesting is seeing if Sterling can reproduce form a little closer to that with his club if played a more similar position. It would also be nice to see a more involved and threatening performance from Kane too. One that is a bit more befitting of his excellent scoring record.

I would not be happy with Dier starting, horribly out of form.

For me it should always be Dier or Henderson in that formation, neither offers much around the box. Henderson is effective at Liverpool because Milner and Wiljnaldum are so mobile.

Kitsondinho Went to the U21s 7-0 thrashing of the mighty Andorra tonight. Was impressed with Lookman, Kenny, Nelson and Solanke. ‘17 year old’ Ryan Sessegnon was dreadful. He looks completely shot of confidence and is clearly suffering from playing in the PL. The only thing he did of note in the match was hit the side netting from 16 yards in the 44th min......The hype machine appears to have eaten him.

Did you travel from Reading to Chesterfield to watch England U21s?

Living in Chesterfield, I decided not to go down to Reading first for the game
We’ve had a fairly decent array of England youth teams here in the past year or so. U17s, U19s, U21s as well as the U17s Euros. To be honest, Chesterfield need it because their last L2 season and the start to their National League campaign has been so awful!!

So the probably team has become the actual team.

Interesting to see the shape that 11 set up in. Could just as easily be 4-2-3-1 as 4-3-3 and has a bit of flexibility to switch around during the game, something they were criticised about a bit during the summer.

+1 on Dier and Henderson.

England's fundamental problem seems to be a reliance on individuals to produce solo moments to unlock a defence rather than teamwork. See Rashford, Sterling, Lingard etc. Even Messi struggles to do it alone at major tournaments against prepared quality defences. So they're certainly not going to manage it.

Just because you do not watch Reading sometimes does not mean you are not a fan. What if you live abroad or work on weekends or live far away?

There's a difference between an exiled Reading FC supporter and someone who goes and "watches most Fulham games". Seriously wtf?

Must admit I was not aware of this. I guess that’s why you changed your username. Do you post on Liverpool and Fulham boards too?

For me, it’s RFC then Metz. Dislike pretty much everyone else, some more than others. Soft spot for Leicester and Boro for personal reasons. Admire and am jealous of Brentford at the moment.

Next match for me will be Ipswich on 10 November. That fixture last season traumatised me.

I thought you liked Everton or is it just anti-Liverpool?

Talking of (ex) Everton I thought Barkley was a non-event on Friday.
With Henderson and Dier already in there as holding midfielders we didn't need Barkley to place most of his passes backwards or square-he is surely in there for his supposed creativity....oh and he is in the Rose/Loftus-Cheek,Ali school of divers.

Very difficult to judge our performance on Friday in the false atmosphere but regrettably once again Rashford has shown that he is not the finisher that we all thought he was going to be-what a couple of terrible misses.

Everton? I don’t like Liverpool it’s true, but prefer them to other big clubs.

Liverpool and Spurs are preferable because they always screw up in the end.

I thought England were pretty decent on Friday. We could easily have had a 2-0 win had Rashford not been so wasteful. Seen a few negative assessments in the press but I was happy with our display.

Nah, changed my username as I forgot the password to the old one and deleted cookies one day. I don't use other forums - but then I don't often use this one to talk about Reading.

Have to agree with this - but then it seems the press are taking a while to catch up with (in general) a shift in opinion amongst the fans to a more realistic view of what England might achieve.

Croatia is one of those places I would take a 0-0 every day of the week, tough place to go. Poland, Serbia, Ukraine are other venues I'd happiliy take a draw at if someone offerered it before the game.
We are an evolving team trying to play a new brand of football and on the whole it is working, the press need to give the team a bit of space to breathe.

I would agree that we played alright on Friday and should probably have walked away with a win.

Most of the post-match stuff I read at the weekend was about the circumstances of the game and Sancho making his debut off the bench. I saw little actual reporting or opinion on the game tbh so I’m not sure if the media are that far behind some fans expectations or not.

This side is developing well enough, they’re not world beaters, and won’t be whilst Dier and Henderson are in midfield together, but it’s a promising squad that isn’t far off being a very decent side.

I have said for a while that I don't think he's as good as the hype...you lot were blaming JM style of play which is pretty valid.

I just seem him as another 'Welbeck' tbh
