Would love to be a fly on the wall in the Argie dressing room. Their manager looked like he was ready to beat the living crap out of them. Looked like a right thug.

Ronaldo would have been trying to make something happen. Messi just isn't the kind of player that can play without world beaters around him

Stranded Interesting* point on VAR made on the 5 live commentary just now. Everytime the ref is called over to the TV to check for a pen, he has given it. Would take a brave ref to view the footage and disagree I guess.

May well save time just to give the pen when VAR give the nod.

Fair point to make I guess, but given VAR is used only when the VAR officials think something has been missed, it shouldn't be a surprise that most (or all) are given.

If/when VAR works properly (and I think it has worked well in the World Cup) then the VAR officials won't refer anything that they don't think is nailed on.

I'm a bit unsure how the VAR gave the Aussie pen, when it clearly shows no intentional movement of the hand/arm to the ball.

The ref didn't give it straight away and i don't see how the VAR showed he'd made a 'clear and obvious error'

I think it was given cos his arm was outstretched, and the ball hit it on the way towards the goal ( ish). The defender certainly did not mean to handle it, but that is not relevant if the arms are up/ out.

Harsh decision, but prolly correct.

'greed...you can't have your hands that high around the box

you'd get the anti-football mob, like Allardyce, Pulis etc making it a tactic

If the defender didn't mean to handle it, it can't be deliberate handball.

Watching Argentina last night was like watching Reading last season.

It was that bad.

Now imagine if Simione got hold of that team. They’d be world beaters.

Soz if I have misunderstood your post but guidelines changed in 2013 so that handballs are not only awarded for it being 'deliberate'

Except it wasn't high anywhere near the ball or the ball's flight, it was the jumping defender's trailing arm that was raised

By the released FIFA definition of handball, clarified specifically for this world cup, would indicate that wasn't a pen

I do like the stat that 99.6% of people watching TV in Iceland last Saturday afternoon were watching the football (along with a tenth of the country's population currently being in Russia).

Not sure I'd go so far as saying Messi can't play without world beaters around him, but I would agree that a Maradona or either of the two Ronaldo's would've dragged something more out of those two games.

It would appear that the Portugal team is much more of a team, despite it's short comings, and are much better setup as a platform for their superstar to win them games as well though.

The offence remains 'deliberate' handball. There has been guidance on what to consider, but it's still deliberate.

If your arm is up in the air at a corner, it's deliberate unless you're flailing in the process of going over.

I was merely correcting Lux.
