Winston Biscuit I don't see Marcos Alonso's omission from the Spain squad as a shock at all tbh. He obviously chips in with goals which help his club side but defensively I just don't rate him and that is what Spain would want him for. I have also read before that the Spanish public don't like him and there is a general feeling that he should not represent the country. getting pissed up and killing someone tends to have that effect.

With Monreal you have a better defender and he can also drop in to a back 3 too. Alba is just a far better player than Alonso. Easy decision for me.

As you say Alonso is also a murderer which doesn't help.

Just looked up his Spain career. he has played a total of just 11 minutes for the national team in a friendly.

Personally, I think it was the most sensible choice, he is going to play every game after all.

Not a fan of strikers being captains but the options are fairly limited. Would probably have gone with Henderson due to him doing that job for Liverpool but not that fussed either way.

As long as he isn't on free kick duty its all good!

I'll still waiting for them to give up on that claim joke, but no... they just keep persisting...

I never really get the arguments from fans around the captaining of a team. By it's very nature most of the impact of a captain is done away from the eyes and ears of the supporters so we are really not in a position to claim who should or shouldn't be captain.

TBF when he claimed that goal it was pretty embarrassing, he deserves any pelters he receives

No issue with him being captain mind, it's not like you need to be bright to do it is it? You just have to remember the pennant and that it's heads or tails yeah?

The whole thing just raised a massive Partridge shrug from me

He was a striker chasing the golden boot, if he wants to claim a goal then so be it...

I'm sure the irony was not lost on Liverpool fans that Sturridge had a similar thing happen to him back in 2016

Think it was more the lengths he went to to convince people. Swearing on his kids life etc.

Who do we have for free kick duty though? Rashford, Dier, Young?

It is a problem for us for sure. I think Rashford will probably get the nod on free kicks. He takes them for United so he must have a reasonable level of ability on the dead ball front.

A misjudged comment in the heat of the moment that I'm sure he regrets, but I'm pretty sure he did about 1 interview on the subject right after the game, and maybe a tweet, and everyone else filled in the gaps themselves.

I maintain my Partridge shrug.

It doesn't bother me either but in the wider twittersphere there is no way he is going to get away with it is he?

Of course not, players get criticised when they breathe on there. The meme was funny for about a week, but nearly two months later? Tiresome

Interesting point. Rashford takes a lot of set pieces for United, when he's actually playing, including corners. I don't think he'll be on the pitch all that much though.

Henderson has taken a fair number of corners for Liverpool over the years hasn't he, and free kicks, but not ones around the box with the other options Liverpool have right?

Kane's probably top of the list for free kicks around the box isn't he? And Dier can ping it from a little further out, if he's on the pitch. I'm guessing OMA might've meant corners not free kicks, after Hodgson's odd choice at Euros.

We look a bit short of set piece specialists really don't we?
