Sutekh Heard some are calling for Russia to have the finals taken away from them after all the shenanigans with did they/didn't they, spies and diplomats

All cobblers of course as even if it happened I doubt any country could organise such and event in about 3 months.

Had a pub discussion about short-notice world cups when they awarded Qatar, our conclusion was that while England could potentially do it the only real option would be the US wouldn't it? Which we then decided the Qatar decision was obviously a sham and its all been set up for the US to host 2022.

I'd have thought the likes of Germany, France and Spain (to lesser extent perhaps) could hold a World Cup at short notice just as well as England or the US.

Apparently some of the French players were subjected to racial abuse during their recent visit to Russia......that, added to the various other similar incidents there....the actual football may become the sideshow.

I'm sure there will be a few isolated incidents, as there will generally be in any tournament, but we always have a bit of scaremongering in the lead up to every tournament and there's hardly ever any of the predicted trouble when the day comes.

I'm sure the potential for racial abuse of players is greater in Russia than pretty much any other country that might hold a significant tournament, so that might be a relevant concern, but I'm hoping that Russia will be looking to enhance their reputation worldwide after recent events and so might have things under a bit more control than we're giving them credit for at the moment.

Brexit backlash/Russian retaliation/British refs not susceptible to the bribes?

Or maybe our refs are sh1t

It’s none of the above obviously.....obviously?

On reflection I don't suppose our officials are too upset about not going

Anyone who went to England v Russia in Marseille would be crazy to go to the World Cup in Russia. And that's before any nerve agent diplomatic row retaliation.
Maybe our officials think the same.

It was because Clattenburg was the only elite referee during the qualifying process I believe. When he moved to Saudi Arabian football he forfeited his elite status and it was too late to put someone else on the list from England.

It is a bit of a joke really. I think Michael Oliver is well worthy of going to a World Cup, he's been very decent for a few years now. Shame for him.

Read that Essam El-Hadary might be set to become the oldest player ever to appear at the World Cup - he made his debut for Egypt in 1996, briefly retiring from international football in 2013, before re-establishing himself as no.1 during the qualifying campaign last year. He will be 45 years and 151 days old  on the date of Egypt's first group game against Uruguay, and at his first World Cup*, since Egypt haven't qualified since they were in England's group in 1990.

Record currently held by Colombia goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon, who played in the last tournament in 2014 aged 43 years and 3 days, having also been in the same 1994 squad (although he didn't play) as the tragic Andres Escobar.

*He would also take a record from our David James, who is currently the oldest World Cup debutant, at 39 (in 2010).

So then, how long before England and France get withdrawn from the WC over safety concerns....

No chance will that happen. The Russian's will want to look whiter than white in front of the worlds media. I'd expect a bit of a charm offensive closer to the start of it all.

Feel sorry that the Ox is out of the World Cup after his rejuvenation at Liverpool this season. Would have been a great option for England to take to the finals.

Love the retro feel of all of the Adidas WC kits.

Spain, Colombia, Mexico and Germany are particular highlights.

Such a shame. He's never played better. Hopefully he'll get another chance

So in your opinion there will be absolutely no surprises at all in the group stages and all the fancied sides will get through?

Because that always happens doesn't it................
