Just as well the Scottish camp were insisting home to Lithuania wasn't a must-win game, or they'd be disappointed with a 1-1 draw.

Slovenia 1-0 Slovakia in the other game. England now lead group by 2 points. Expecting the visit to Slovenia to be a tediously dull affair with England struggling to create anything while trying desperately not to give anything stupid away at the back.

.....a severe dose of realism setting in here.

Whatever happened to our loyal national optimism?

We're done

I think it died at least 25 years ago.

The idea that English fans are unrealistically optimistic hasn't really been true for a generation - probably about the time that we started actually seeing foreign football, and realising that despite our success in Europe in the late 70s and early 80s, English football wasn't way above every other league out there.

Agreed, and we are really seeing our noses getting rubbed into it right now.

A shame, but in reality, this is pretty much what we have reaped since the S$Y revolution kicked in.

A wins a win, but 2-0 against a nation the size of two Readings isn't nothing much to happily dwell on.

Hope Southgate gets the job...hope that he makes a real success of it...but for the foreseeable, it can only be the proverbial poison chalice

The manager can't do much about the malaise but he could make a start by selecting the right players.

Rooney. FFS. :|

3 on the trot have selected him when he is clearly past it, has no chance of being effective in 2018, is keeping other better younger players out of the team thus denying them important experience which is an essential part of the bedding in process.

Laughable really.

bobby1413 For ages now I've been baffled by Rooney being captain.

Evening he scored a hattrick ever game is he really captain material?

I said to my m8 a captain should have something about them. Charisma, intelligence, an ability to speak naturally and inspire.

Can only imagine Rooney's pep talks "alright lads, so errrrr, this is a big game yea ... We've got to win it. Be passionate and mmmmm give it your all".

Henderson or Hart are two more natural leaders IMO (them two just spring to mind. There's other better options probably)

There was a good article suggesting they get rid of the role. What purpose does it serve in modern international football.

Who would take part in the coin flipping at the start?

It's taken Rooney about four years to actually understand what's happening and to call out heads or tails.

Jamie Corden? Gunnersaurus? Little Joe the cripple?

It doesn't really matter.

There has to be a go to person for the officials on the pitch, therefore there has to be a nominated captain.

Would entirely agree that Rooney is not a captain in my book but then, like all of us, we have no idea what he is like amongst the team. Perhaps he does inspire and lead and foster respect even if we do find that hard to believe.

To be honest though I'd expect even Bobby Moore would struggle to make any difference if he was captain of that lot.

Until we manage to find a manager that can inspire and lead I think we're going to stay in a pretty cr@p place with England and whoever is made captain won't make any difference.

Oh and replace Rooney with Dier on Tuesday.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/ ... torn-syria

China in meltdown, but shame the focus is on them, massive result for Syria

Surprised the exerts of the Syrian team haven't been more widely publicised, all things considered it's a pretty good story, would be amazing if amongst the war they were able to qualify for their first World Cup

Iran
South Korea
--------------------
Uzbekistan
--------------------
Syria
China
Qatar

Looking at that you wouldn't say it was impossible, Iran and South Korea are obviously some way ahead but that Play-Off spot looks up for grabs, particularly with China and Qatar in a bit of a shambles

If you come 3rd you have to go through two Play-Offs against the other Asian group (currently UAE) and then North America (probably one of Panama, Honduras, or Trinidad)

Syria have been playing their home games all over the place, already in the qualifiers alone they've won matches in Iran, Oman, and then drew with South Korea in Seremban, Malaysia

Also to add to their underdog status, not a single member of their squad plays their domestic football outside of Asia, including goalkeeper Mahmoud Al-Youssef who keeps goal for United Victory in the Maldives

And England start with no Rooney. Ridiculous media frenzy over the fact he's not starting

And that was a total nob pass from Dier. If England don't win this everyone'll be pointing at Rooney being missing

England are quite appalling. Reading play better keep ball than this bunch of useless dipsticks. And like Reading, England also have no threat going forward.
