Euro 96 v Euro 16

by TBM » 02 Jun 2016 13:25

Watching the Alan Shearer documentary last night got me thinking how good a team we actually had back then and should have won the competition (if only Gazza didn't hesitate when the ball came across the goal)

So if you had to pick a starting xi using that squad and this one - what would your XI be?

Euro 96 and WC 98 are probably my two favourite tournaments.

That is all.

Italia '90 for me.

Platt's goal!*

That is all.

Tricky in terms of what formation you'd play but over the course of the England careers as they are now I think only Rooney would get into a starting XI from a combined squad.

The best XI probably wouldn't include a few from the side that actually played in '96 either mind, so if you ask the same question in 5 years time you'd hope that the likes of Ali, Sterling and Kane might force their way into the reckoning.

4-4-2

Seaman
Neville, G
Pearce
Campbell
Adams
Anderton
Ince
Gascoinge
McManaman
Rooney
Shearer

Hart
Neville
Pearce
Southgate
Cahill

Dier
Gazza
Deli Ali

McManaman
Shearer
Kane

You are 100% right - that was a good team in 1996. It's tough to choose anybody from 2016! I'm a huge fan of the new team and had to use all my prejudices (no Ince, no Adams, etc) to produce the above.

Sorry, that seems a bit daft to just throw out players for the sake of it.

How can you pick Southgate and Cahill over Adams?

On the subject of the OP, I wondered (stupidly really) if there was anyone who had survived from the '96 tournament, to make it into '16 (maybe a defender who was 18 back in 1996 or something).

Answer was no. Indeed there is only one man in the named squads who played in Euro 2000, Tomas Rosicky. Iker Casillas was an unused substitute and is the only other player to have made his country's squad in both tournaments. Which is nice.

And that statoid makes me feel old. Like Casillas, I was 19 at Euro 2000. :(

Casillas became the most capped European this week. 167 I think I read.

A colombian keeper was in squads for both 1994 and 2014, got put on as a late sub, which was nice.

I got a little sad earlier thinking of how much fun football tournaments were to follow in my younger days, and how they will never be like that again. WC 98 was perfect for me, just the right age, in the boozer for every game, watched every game with a huge crowd of mates, long hot summer days boozing it up, little responsibility in life to worry about and I cared about football loads too. That month was purely about excitedly waiting for the next game, then having a brilliant time each time we played.

Most of the mates I watched them with I have little contact with any more and I just don't care about football that much to get excited now. BOOOOOO!

I think what struck me last night was how fine the margins are at major tournaments and what a strange thing perception is.

It's been said that the country as a whole was a more positive place in 1996 although that may just be because we were younger or that we had a major tournament on home soil to support.

The simple truth though is that we played well in the 2nd half against Scotland, were excellent against Holland and very good against Germany in the Semi-final. However the opening game against the Swiss, the 1st half against Scotland and the Spanish game were every bit as *dull & uninspiring* as many subsequent campaigns.

Italia 90 had a similar start but we grew stronger as that tournament went on.

However I'd argue (and often have) that the best team we had in a tournament in my lifetime was Euro 2004. I genuinely believe we could have won that. We were consistently good, and actually exciting to watch, for all 4 of our matches that year.

Yeah was thinking about that earlier when I mentioned Italia '90. We were scratchy against Ireland, barely deserved our victory against Egypt, needed a last minute winner against the Belgians, and were a dive or two from going out to Cameroon. We had a terrific squad (Steve Bull excepted), yet rarely played like semi-finalists or potential winners, with the exception maybe of when we woke up in the semi-final against Germany.

I think I was the right age to enjoy these at their most late teens/early 20's so in the pub almost constantly.

Looking back though, whilst the experience of Euro 96 was great, the actual tournament itself was pretty dull bar a couple of decent England performance. 2 QFs and 1 SF went to pens after 0-0's for example.

Italian 90 was great for everything except the football.

It got the final it deserved, a workmanlike Germany overcoming a cynical Argentina with a late penalty after Argentina had 2 players sent off.

Thinking about Euro 96 makes me feel really old - but then, I am.

I remember a work colleague back in 93 who was a season ticket holder at Old Trafford (still is) and said as it was one of the host grounds for Euro 96 he could sign up for tickets early so I asked him to put me down for the opening game, the wembley quarter final and Wembley semi final as I'd seen that if England won their group they'd play all their games there. I had no belief back then we could get to the final (we'd just failed to qualify for the 94 World Cup) so didn't bother asking for tickets for that - plus I couldn't really afford it. It seem ridiculous back then to be buying tickets for something more than 2 years away.

So I got pretty good tickets for the Switzerland game, OK-ish tickets for the Spain match and excellent ones for the Germany game. Walking back from Wembley after the semi final was the worst I have ever felt after a football match. The tension during extra time was horrendous. At the time, I didn't realise how close gazza's near miss was but I remember Anderton hitting the post when I was certain he was going to score.

I went on holiday the after the semi final and didn't bother watching the final.
