TBM So if you had to pick a starting xi using that squad and this one - what would your XI be?

TBM Watching the Alan Shearer documentary last night got me thinking how good a team we actually had back then and should have won the competition (if only Gazza didn't hesitate when the ball came across the goal)
So if you had to pick a starting xi using that squad and this one - what would your XI be?

Sanguine On the subject of the OP, I wondered (stupidly really) if there was anyone who had survived from the '96 tournament, to make it into '16 (maybe a defender who was 18 back in 1996 or something).
Answer was no. Indeed there is only one man in the named squads who played in Euro 2000, Tomas Rosicky. Iker Casillas was an unused substitute and is the only other player to have made his country's squad in both tournaments. Which is nice.
And that statoid makes me feel old. Like Casillas, I was 19 at Euro 2000.

genome Didn't know they held any tournaments during WW1

Vision The simple truth though is that we played well in the 2nd half against Scotland, were excellent against Holland and very good against Germany in the Semi-final. However the opening game against the Swiss, the 1st half against Scotland and the Spanish game were every bit as *dull & uninspiring* as many subsequent campaigns.
Italia 90 had a similar start but we grew stronger as that tournament went on.

It was never offside.

Winston Smith Euro 96 and WC 98 are probably my two favourite tournaments.
That is all.

Tricky in terms of what formation you'd play but over the course of the England careers as they are now I think only Rooney would get into a starting XI from a combined squad.
The best XI probably wouldn't include a few from the side that actually played in '96 either mind, so if you ask the same question in 5 years time you'd hope that the likes of Ali, Sterling and Kane might force their way into the reckoning.
4-4-2
Seaman
Neville, G
Pearce

Adams
Anderton
