Best of the World Cup?

by Ark Royal » 14 Jul 2018 20:59

A day early I know, but to date my best XI would be:

Lloris
Pavard Varane Godin Strinic
Mbappe Kante Modric Hazard
Kane Lukaku

Subs: Pickford, Trippier, Maguire, Granqvist, Rakitic, De Bruyne, Cavani

Player of the tournament: Kante just nicks it ahead of Modric.

Game of the tournament: Japan 2 Belgium 3. An end-to-end epic. Special mention to Portugal 3 Spain 3 and Mexico 1 Germany 0. France 4 Argentina 3 was nowhere near as close as the scores suggests.

Goal of the tournament: Pavard vs Argentina. Also loved Cuadrado's goal vs Poland after THAT pass by James Rodriguez and Chadli's last-gasp winner vs Japan.

No Ronaldo?

His performance in THAT Portugal Spain game was a bit special

Good to see Trippier making the cut....think that he has had a cracking WC

Pavard has been brilliant for France. And I like the fact he looks like a nerd rather than a footballer

The Serbian youngster with the double barrelled name was also very good.

I know he got the golden boot, but Kane wouldn't make it for me. Had too few chances from open play. Maguire would be the England player to get in for me. Not even sure he's that great a defender, but i love the way he carries the ball out

Milinkovic-savic, complete beast.

I know what you’re saying about Kane but you can’t win the golden boot and not make it, you just can’t.

People putting Mbappe in the midfield just to squeeze him into their teams? Not having that

I wouldn’t have Kane in the team of the tournament as he was a disappointment in the knock out stages. I would have Trippier in there. He was superb.

Modric getting Golden Ball was a bit bizarre. It was almost like an unlucky loser award.

Mbappe, Pogba, Kante, Hazard all ahead of him in my book.

agreed on Trippier, but he'd be the only one. Belgian TV had him in their team of the tournament.

OTOH they also pointed out that no team lost more matches than England at the World Cup.

True, but two of those losses were friendlies
