Indeed. 2 players racing onto a 50/50 ball from opposite directions and one player goes in with his foot head high?

He might have had his eyes on the ball, he might not have intended to hurt the keeper but any suggestion that is not dangerous play of the worst kind and not worthy of a red card is utter bollocks.

Unbelievable from Gary Neville in the commentary box. One player kicks another in the head and he is surprised it is a red card. I like Neville, but all he had to do was look at the replay and admit he was wrong.

Studs up and both feet off the ground. I thought that was the very definition of a red card, or does that only count when contact is made below the knee?

Its not utter bollocks RR. Because the laws of the game state that dangerous play can only be a yellow card offence.

Semantics.

Instead of "dangerous play of the worst kind" I should have said "serious foul play" of course. Must brush up on my Laws of The Game.

"Any player who lunges at an opponent for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or two legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.”

Ooo interesting... accidentally do it to a team mate or an official and you can't get sent off?

There was pretty much a carbon copy of Mane's challenge in today's Swansea v Newcastle game which only received a yellow, presumably because Alfie Mawson stayed up. Possibly confirming the Neviller's thoughts that if Mane had been anywhere else on the pitch he'd have avoided a red

Only heard a fragment of Neville's views, but I'd concur that had Mane gone into that challenge with an opposition defender or midfielder it might have played out differently.

I can see why Moss got the red card out. Mane was unfortunate - similar to Cahill on the opening day, no malice, barely even 'reckless' it's a mistimed challenge where two players are coming together at speed; two times out of ten Ederson misses the ball and flattens Mane and is sent off instead. But ultimately Mane's foot was high (the reverse angle behind Ederson shows just how high) and Moss applied the letter of the law.

In general I'd like to see referees be a bit more like Mike Jones and use a bit of common sense, and, appear to at least, ask themselves 'do I need to send this player off?' - rather than automatically reach for the red card, as in the case of Mane (and Cahill).
