I kind of agree with Brobot. We were a statistical anomaly on this analysis last year but that doesn't necessarily mean the analysis is wrong, there's just a margin for error.

However, I also believe that the expected goals analysis is statistics for statistics sake and flirts the fine line between useful analysis and total bollocks.

I would speculate that if you aggregated/averaged the last two years...it would give a truer reflection of Reading FC and be more in line with expected goals. It's probabilistic so wouldn't really call it 'error'.

The best way to evaluate odds, evaluate player acquisition, coaching, tactics...etc.

It can be as simple as someone actually figuring out if you should put someone on the post at* corners based on actual evidence...rather than the one time you rem someone scoring cos you left the post etc

Will also start influencing crowds/pundits as well...crowds clap when a player switches play to the opposite wing, it's considered 'intelligent' play. The only way to analyse it properly is what happens from the new position...when you look at the numbers the probabilities are pretty much exactly the same in terms of opportunities created i.e it's not a 'good' ball that deserves applauding

I wish someone would sit Alan Shearer through every goal attempt he's ever made to shut him up with the "should've scored" routine

The big downside is potentially ending up like Arsenal over the last few years. Just guesswork on my part but their player recruitment seems largely driven by this model (based on the profile of the players, smaller, agile...etc rather than power, strength, size)

What are you laughing at? The defeat or Chelsea paying £18m for Giroud?

£18m for Giroud is pretty good value IMHO. Especially with the mad transfer fees around.

I think Giroud is criminally underrated and if he was playing for someone like Everton, he would be constantly banging in 20 goals a season.

Swansea looked dead and buried but the change of manager has worked wonders-it may not last but the results last night and v Liverpool must surely give Swansea fans hope.
As for Arsenal, they haven't changed manager and have little chance of making the top 4 (again).

A goal every 2.5 games for Arsenal is pretty good going. Might not do it against all the big teams but certainly knows where the net is and when people like Marhez are having bids of £65m TURNED DOWN :!: its great value.

**wild rumour alert**

I know someone who has a m8 who works for the agency that manages Arsene Wenger. He says his m8 told him that Arsenal & Wenger have held talks with Ancelotti about taking over in the summer.

I checked and I can actually see that some newspapers have also run stories about how he was at the weekends match.
