Last ever UEFA Cup Final

by TBM » 21 May 2009 11:49

Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 Werder Bremen AET

Another good game with plenty of shots on goal, the UEFA cup has been quality this season and i've prefered watching it over the Champions League.

Shakhtar were deserved winners if you ask me but i reckon the result might have been slightly different had Werder not had players out suspended (Diego mainly).

Roll on the Europa League!
Anyone shed some light into how the format for it is going to work

Yeah, every team plays about 20 games. At the end of the season they work out they've lost £50K per game and the touranment is ditched.

Just reading on wiki and it says:

Qualification will also change significantly. Associations ranked 7–9 in the UEFA coefficients will send the Cup winner and three other teams to the UEFA Europa League qualification, all other nations send a Cup winner and two other teams, except Liechtenstein, Andorra and San Marino, who will only send a Cup winner

So how come we are only sending the cup winners and 2 other teams???

(i know 7th now gets a place but thats only due to Chelsea and Everton being in our cup final and they've already blagged their place)

12 groups of four at the league stage, will play each other twice each, so 6 league games, as oppose to the current 4. Top two in each group progress to the last 32 (joined by 8 teams from the champions league groups, as I understand it) which is two-legged knock-out.

TBM - we aren't ranked 7-9 in the UEFA coefficients. I don't know whether that's a typo on Wiki.

There's more than one UEFA coefficient. You're looking at the national team one, where England are indeed 7th. If you look at the League coefficient, you'll see England are top. The top three leagues get 4 CL places, and three for the EL, the next three get three places for both cups, and those ranked 7-9 get 2 CL slots and four EL slots.
