January Rumours

by Sutekh » 01 Jan 2017 09:39

In Charles Watts' last piece for the EP he says boldly that

Reading are looking to significantly strengthen the spine of the team with moves for a striker, midfielder and central defender being planned.

What options they go for will be dictated by whoever is running the club.

Midfielder

Strongly linked with a move for Jordon Mutch

Striker

No bids have been made for Scott Hogan but informal talks with Brentford have happened to assess what sort of area any package would need to be in to get him

There is also, apparently, a possibility of Reading getting a loan of an Argentine striker who currently holds an EU passport. Believe Reading4eva raised a "bloke down the pub" thread in this very forum recently which some were quick to dismiss. Perhaps there might actually be something in Monterrey's Rogelio Funes Mori after all...

Defender

No ideas who in this area but is certainly something the club need to do as there is no real cover for McShane and Moore. Cooper is inexperienced and prone to cock ups this season. Dont get me wrong he is a good player but really needs to benefit from playing regular games out on loan. Berg really is just alarming as a centre back despite being able to do a job there. Lastly Stam apparently sees Blackett as a left back  so again would only be used as cover.

On top of all that I would also suggest Reading need to look at the long term keeper situation.

Leonardo Ulloa? Good player, but doesn't exactly offer pace up front, he'd basically be another Kermorgant.

Apparently he's an 'exciting, young forward', so it's not Ulloa.

Peterborough facing battle to keep Forrester

Peterborough face a battle to hang on to their latest promising star Chris Forrester.

The Irish midfielder turned 24 in December and has admirers at Championship Brentford, Derby and Reading.

Forrester has thrived as captain at League One Posh this term following his impressive progress after a 2015 move from Irish club St Patrick’s Athletic.

He first caught the eye of bigger clubs with a fine performance in a televised FA Cup clash with Premier League West Brom last season and has continued to improve.

He signed a new three-year contract last summer but could be tempted by a switch to the Championship.

Interesting. Isn't that Jermaine Anderson bloke they have supposed to be good too?

Just speculating, but 19 year old Ezequiel Ponce ( ) of Roma could be the young and talented Argentine striker with an EU passport we're after on loan. Joined Granada for a year on loan in the summer but has struggled for game time, Roma could be keen to recall him and ship him off somewhere else for the rest of the season where he will play more.

Could be well wide of the mark but he fits the description at least, as opposed to Funes Mori who does not hold an EU passport. Not the tallest at 5'9" but seems decent in the air and scored 9 in 10 for Roma's youth team last season.

Ponce is a complete waste of time and resources .. we already have 2 players ( Mendes and Rakels ) who were unknown before we got them and neither of them have pulled up trees, not to mention the fact we have our own youth players anyway .. rather we have a look at the lower leagues tbh ..

We need to be looking at some experience now, like the idea of central defender (certain Watford cb not getting a lot of game time) midfielder and proven goal scorer. If the Chinese takeover does not happen it would be worth the Thais backing a promotion bid as we will be more attractive to potential buyers with a top six finish or even promotion
