RUMOUR - Daryl Murphy

by Oilroyal » 19 Jun 2017 18:30

Bookies making Reading favourites to sign Daryl Murphy, although I'm unsure what to make of this. Maybe Jaap sees Yann and another striker (Murphy) sharing the role next season. I just hope we add a pacey striker as well, if this rumour is true.

He's favourite to stay at Newcastle.

We've already got one aged, slow striker.

It's a no from me.

Can't see it. Basically the same as Yann

Don't we need a spare in case Yann breaks?

Yes please! Capable of 15-20 goals and a replacement for Yann after next season

Never understood why Newcastle signed him, always thought he was very average at Ipswich.

Wouldn't be a bad signing but we need more pace upfront

Don't see the point. At his age, we'll be buying someone to replace him next summer.

"Hey guys our 35 year old striker is retiring next season, what should we do?"
"I know let's sign a 34 year old striker"
"You're fired"

I rated him when he was at Ipswich, and would have taken him last year, but why would we need another Yann?

On the other hand everyone wrote Yann off last season when he was 34 ...

Do you play poker? Sometimes you win with a pair of 2s.
Doesn't mean you should bet heavy on that hand every time.
That last thing we need is another 30+ striker. It's just putting off the issue rather than solving it.

If Stam's been given a decent transfer budget then Murphy makes a lot of sense. Yann cant be expected to maintain form or fitness throughout the whole season and Murphy would be ideal to share the workload. With a decent budget this would also allow us to bring in a young, pacey forward giving Jaap even more options other than Yann with (a another with pace) and Joseph Mendes in mind

Seems a pointless signing to me when what we really need is a much younger striker, say 25, with a proven goalscoring record, say one every 2.5 games, someone hungry to prove himself at this level and ideally a full international as well. If only we could find one of those......

Why is there even a thread on this? If there's not already a market for it, I could ask for odds on us to sign Scott Hogan, for example, and we'd go in as favourites. Doesn't mean anything.

why? he managed it last year, and got better as the season went on. Clearly keeps himself in decent nick
