Rumour - Matt Clarke

by Sutekh » 22 May 2018 21:15

According to the Chronicle, Reading are on the trail of 21 year old Portsmouth central defender Matt Clarke

If true he’s expected to cost a wedge as he signed a new 3 year deal in February

He has amassed 108 league appearances already so would not expect him to become an Academy prospect...

Not getting the logic on this one. Ok, he has League experience but came through the Ipswich academy where he played 4 first team games. Surely the likes of Andresson, Osho and Holmes have as much potential. Pity Cooper didn’t stay really.

He has over 100 apps which none of those do. If we are interested, we clearly think he is ready to play at Champ level now, or at least but serious pressure on those who are playing.

Doesn't matter which academy he came through - Alfie Mawson was with us and Brentford and never played a first team game for either but has gone on to be a PL player (will be again next season no doubt) and in the England squad, Players develop in different ways and at different rates.

yeah its a shame none of our academy lads are quite at that standard. Truth is, if he is good enough, which his stats suggest he is, then we should be interested. In saying that, I don't really take any of the speculation seriously when it is only appearing in the Chronicle

Cooper was definitely a frustrating departure, if understandable at the time
