Don’t think JLow has ever broken anything, think this is just a rehash of old news

Notice Villa have re-signed Alan Hutton who is no doubt on big wages. Suggests maybe the situation there not as bad as been made out

Has taken a pay cut apparently, not sure to what extent his wages have been cut down

He's getting on a bit too. I imagine it's not uncommon for older footballers to take pay cuts so they can get used to living on less money when they retire.

ha, I'm sure they don't choose to take the pay cut to help them get used to having less money :)

But obviously as they get older they are worth less generally, as they are less good.

Hutton was reportedly on £30,000 p/w. I'd imagine he's still on something like £20,000 p/w.

Agbonlahor and Terry have both left so that's £6m off the wage bill for starters. If we signed Elphick, that would be another £1m.

If every other player took a 33% pay cut, they'd still be one of the highest paid squads in the division. Micah Richards is on £50,000 a week and hasn't kicked a ball for 18 months plus all those Championship standard players on £35-40,000 a week. (Hogan, McCormick, Lansbury etc).

Villa have bought some decent players but there's a lot of average players leeching a lot of money.

Makes you think clubs should move towards a heavier emphasis on performance and appearance based payments over basic wages.

If they sell Chester as seems likely, and have lost Terry, can't really see why they'd want to lose Elphick. Unless we are paying a stupid fee for him, which I wouldn't put past us

Agreed, looking at the basic economics of it, Elphick would appear to offer them much greater value unless they are so desperate, they will accept any reasonable offer.

The other side of the coin is that if they do owe HMRC a sizeable wedge, releasing the likes of Terry and Agbonlahor isn't actually generating any revenue to pay the tax bill, it's just reducing the flow of money out, so much like us with Le Fondre, they need to sell.

Elphick is already an outcast. I reckon the man himself wants out.

Hutton has taken a huge pay cut to sign on year at Villa, he was offered parity of pay and two years at Forest.....

Could get Tshilbola back for a pittance, oops forgot, he’ll be replacing Grealish in their first team.

He couldn't even hold down a first team spot at MK Dons in League One. What makes you think he'll be going anywhere near us or Villa?

I wonder what happened to him. He was one of our best young players, even had Gareth Southgate looking at him.

I think we should bring him back after all form is temporary talent is permanent.

He had some injury problems and jumped at fame and fortune too soon.

If he was fully fit and showing good attitude I'd have him in over Evans, Berg or Edwards, maybe Kelly or good old hammy-Swift too.

The Chronic are reporting this deal is on the verge of collapse because Villa are short of defenders.

I'm guessing that if Elphic really wanted to come he would. There are all sorts of ways a player could force the issue.

Hmmm, first team at Villa or first team at Reading. Going to come down to how happy he is at Villa and how settled his family are.

Overall really not bothered whether he signs or not. Good player he is so no problems if it happens, but just perhaps Reading should look to buy a leading talent from Division 3. But then their last idea along those lines of that was John O’Shea so perhaps not.

Elphick still lives on south coast, so from a family perspective, we would be a better call ...

QPR want him on a season long loan, now that would be a real kick in the balls, the fake hoops seem to have no problems enticing players like Wells and Hemed, WTF is wrong with this club?

Dear Hobnob,

Stop caring about signings.

If we got Elphick, we'd ruin him. We'd ruin Hemed and Wells like we ruined Murray and Vydra. (and Aluko, Blackett, Mutch, Swift, Grabban, Oxford, Jaakkola, Sa)

While I agree in principle, that Elphick would be a solid signing, it's time to stop thinking about transfers in and towards: the manager, the coaches, the player liaisons, the captains, the physios, the data analysts...
