SPECULATION - Left Backs

by Southbank Old Boy » 26 Jun 2008 12:22

It seems pretty obvious we'll be losing Shorey in the next few weeks but I've not seen or heard anything about who we might see as a suitable replacement.

One player I've seen a little of who seems likely to be available this summer is Joe Mattock or Leicester. They seem to be having a similar time to us right now, their better players being picked off after relegation.

Now Mattock is a young defender who's impressed at Leicester enough to get into the England U21 setup even though he's only 18 or 19. He's pretty big for a fullback and has apparently played a bit on the left side of midfield too, so he's not exactly a clogger.

There are rumours that Prem clubs are looking to make a move, but if he knows we'll be offering him first team football at the higher end of the Championship on what should be pretty competitive terms after our Premier League windful I think we'd stand a chance of getting him.

They've just lost Stearman, so he might get more chances now.

Opposite flank and Mattock played the best part of 30 games so I don't think that will come into his thinking.

It looks likely that he'll leave now they've been relegated. At such a young age I'd hope he realises that going to a big club will see him get very limited first team experience and he'd be better off in the Championship for a couple more years.

Rumour going about that we're keen on Hermann Hreidsson? (sp?) of Portsmouth.
Is he a left back? I know he's defensive. Might not be a bad signing if true.

One problem I would have is that he has a very playing different style to Shorey.

There are not many full backs like Shorey about, certainly none in our price range.

Like Mattock, seems to be a lot of Premiership clubs looking at him, though would be a great feel good signing if we did get him. Lose Shorey, replace him with potentially an even better player....

Scott Golbourne.

I think we will see a fair bit of him next season to be honest. There is no other reason we would have let DLC go, knowing there is a good chance we'd lose Shorey if they didn't think Golbourne couldn't step in.

I think letting DLC go probably had more to do with the fact he's a 34 year old right back on half decent wages than seeing Golbourne as the better left back. We have to be looking to the future, and at 34 DLC has had his day.

From what I've seen of Golbourne I think he'll still be back up for whoever comes in to replace Shorey.
