melonhead If the reading way is not to spend 10 oxf*rd million pound on benik afobe, then im all for it.tbf

Sucinct and to the point.

You do have to wonder how, even with £60,000,000 a year in tv money, spending £8m and £10m on Championship players is in anyway sustainable long term when you've got a ground capacity of less than 12,000. If the aim is to just survive in the Premiership then eventually the owner will get bored. It's potentially another Bolton in the making.

Royal_jimmy How do you know that they are rich though? I doubt they're any richer than Madejski was in his prime.

They must be rich, they own a football club.

Of course we'd all love owners who'd invest the right money on the right players, do their best to keep the good players we have and reinvest money made by selling players we couldn't hang onto.

But I'm not sure examples like this are anything to aspire to.

Zingaravich didn't have the money he said he did. Bad luck for us but nothing anyone could have done about it.

And Coppell decided the best way forward was to pretty much go with the team he had to keep the unity and honour the performances which won us promotion.

All we can do is hope the Thais are more stable financially than Anton and more comfortable parting with it than Madejski was towards the end. But let's not wish for silly spending on players that simply aren't worth it. That can only be bad for us and football on the whole.

Anton Zingaravich owned a football club.

RJ, while in no way I account for perhaps why you really do not like Bournemouth or it's club, nor can I account for the rich of Bournemouth actually spending their dosh on their club instead of yachts and jetskis, the town is in the top 10 most unaffordable places to live in the UK, the area of Sandbank is reckoned to be in the top 4 richest communities in the world and allegedly they have more wealth than Scotland. I'm with the general response, we tried to keep our quality players with wages first time round, second time round we either invested badly prior to ascending or then did not actually have the cash to buy.

Reading and the Thames Valley area is hardly impoverished. Sandbanks is a tiny area near Bournemouth and has no real relevance.

However, if you're looking for wild punts, then why doesn't one of the richest, if not the richest companies in the world which has its UK head office in Reading (ie Microsoft) take any active interest in the town's football club?

Microsoft are winners in the Global players market, Reading fc are just another average championship club with no real ambition of getting anywhere near the top

This is actually interesting, doesn't seem to happen much in the UK, walkers were well known for their association with Leicester. In Germany its quite common, BAYER Leverkusen, VW have been Wolfsburg's sponsor for ever, Ford and now laterally RWE with Cologne. It's a shame local businesses in Reading with a worldwide profile have never been interested.

The German community structure is considerably different from that of UK and extends into every aspect of community life. This is very evident in their beer branding.

Good football came too late for Huntley and Palmers. Mr Mad invested in the club of the town that he found his business. I don't know of any other local business that could support a club, and any of your national or global companies would only do it for us if there were a global advertising benefit, hence why we have at best attracted Waitrose. Regular Prem attendance would likely be the next step to change this, but in comparison to other Chump clubs we're doing pretty well with Thai Airways, they're a very good advertisement in a vast area of potential interest and investment.

Back on track, Afobe is not worth 10M, Bournemouth desperate to stay up and good luck to them if they keep Villa pushed to the bottom.

Bayer Leverkusen don't have Bayer in their name because they are sponsored by Bayer. They are really the (rather more successful) equivalent of Vauxhall Motors FC, being original the works team of the company.

Wolfsburg are the same, being originally the Volkswagen work side.

There's also something of a difference between a multinational which happens to have an office in a town, and a multinational from a town, with its HQ there. The latter is far more likely to be associated with a town.

Royal_jimmy I'm referring to when we were a premier league club.
First season, We didn't need to and signing big name players may have wobbled the ship.
Second season - Coppell didn't want to, he mostly chose to stick with the players we had, by the time he realised his mistake we didn't have anyone lined up to sign and money went unspent.

Third season - McDermott was given about £2m to spend on players after the Russian fcuked us over.

Next time - We should hopefully have some money to spend and a manager who knows he needs to spend it.

Yes those examples are true and i was aware of that, my point was / is that its a shame no such community relationship could be established with one of the large companies based in Reading. I agree on the difference between regional HQ and global HQ. Although AMEX seem to be putting a considerable amount into Brighton...

Waitrose is the closest equivalent I agree, but people generally derided that, probably because they were embarrassed about growing up in the most affluent county in the UK (give or take) and therefore attracting middle class sponsorship.

I agree Thai Airwaves is pretty good, i wonder how much they are paying though, it could be zero as a favour for one of our owners, who knows.

No Fixed Abode

Royal_jimmy So Bournemouth are going to sign Afobe for £10m.

Why can't Reading pay proper money that players are worth and Bournemouth are an even smaller club than we are. If Bournemouth can find money to buy players then why can't we?

In the prem we wouldn't even pay £5m for a decent player.

Why are we so tight in investing on the right player?

Whilst this is a silly post.

Reading did have the option to buy Afobe a few years ago but decided against it.

Bayer are relocating their offices from Newbury to Reading..... Green Park IIRC, which means a large company with a history of getting involved with their local football team will be based very near to a local football team - Might be an opportunity there, as long as we don't have to change our name to Bayer Reading.
