Tomorrow's Match at Risk? Snow!!

by The Informant » 11 Jan 2017 13:11

Hi All

Looking at the weather forecast for Reading, there is rain due all day tomorrow until 5pm at which point the rain will turn to heavy snow from 5 - 8pm

Could the game be at risk? I know the pitch will probably deal with it but games usually cancel because of ice and snow on the approaches.

Looking forward to this game too.

I imagine we will have some light snow, play through it then at half time after they've sold their pies the snow will disappear and they will announce the ref has called the game off.

On a more serious note, Do we have the pink or orange ball on standby?

hopefully not - forecasts I've seen are more for rain than snow. Not been particularly wet recently so pitch should be cope

Meh, if the Derby game 6 years ago went ahead, I'm sure this one will.

Didn't a Doncaster match get called off an hour or so before it was due to start because of snow/ice a few years back?

A Newcastle game was called off due to health and safety concerns outside the ground a few years back

They'll probably play through this snow in the first half though n abandon it after half time when it's melted.

I think the first half will be played in a blizzard, which will clear up after half time and the game will be abandoned.

I remember a game at Barnet in 93 or 94 that was called off about 45 mins before kick off as we were arriving at the ground.

Snow drifts will build throughout the opening 45 minutes, but will be thawed out by hot air from the PA system at half time. Only for the game to be called off when a single decisive snowflake lands on the fourth official's eyelash.

It certainly is a possibility the game could fall victim to the weather as I stated on the Matchwatch thread.

While the ground itself has excellent drainage it will have a limit to how much water can be drained in the time available. If there is a more or less constant heavy downpour for several hours before kick off the game will be at serious risk

Additionally with temperatures dropping and heavy snow forecast it is obvious that any surface water will freeze and therefore there will be treacherous icy conditions developing before, during and after the game so the police could well step in anyway and demand postponement on the grounds of safety even if the pitch is playable.

Given its a local derby game and on the telly my guess is that any decision made could be made very late on which is really no help to anyone travelling any distance to the match.

And given the club has already granted free entry for those that had tickets for the first Fulham game expecting the same again if the QPR game gets abandoned rather than postponed maybe a little too far

Wasnt the Burnley FA Cup game a few years back called off about half an hour before kick off?

Remember it well, it only started snowing about 15 miles from Barnet!!
Game was called off as I was parking and we drove back in the rain.
