It's a provisional squad so it will be whittled down to 23 but it's a great sign of his progress to get called up to the provisional squad.

Richly deserved.

Maith an fear Liam 8)

Difficult to see him making the 23 but you would fancy him to start or play a significant role in the Iceland Friendly.
Make your mark Liam.

Best of luck

Just shows how quickly things can change in football, and for any young player what's possible for them

A year ago this month he'd never played a professional game, and had just joined Bath City in the NLS, a year later he's getting called up for the Irish senior squad

It's also a measure of how far he's come by the fact he was never once considered for the Republic Of Ireland U21s, and only ever made four appearances at U19 level (2 as a sub)

Exactly a year ago during the same international break as this one upcoming, Sean Long, Shane Griffin, Niall Keown and Josh Barrett all played for the Ireland U21s against Slovenia, safe to say he's moved onto bigger things than all four of them this season

squad reads like a who's who of the Championship, with a couple of Premier League players thrown in

Yep, fair comment. Think we're currently ranked 24th, which sounds about right. Much harder these days for Irish players to play in the PL, with all the competition. And rugby is encroaching on soccer in youth take-up terms.

The main boys school in my hometown for instance doesn't have any soccer teams. Gaelic football, rugby, rowing, basketball, hurling. No soccer.

I don't think 10, 20 years ago a player with as little experience as Liam Kelly, would be getting a look-in in the squad.

No hockey? Clearly not a prod school then. But rowing? Must be coastal rowing right?

Does that list not include every eligible Irishman in the Premier league?

If they were French, Spanish, Italian or African names then a lot of them probably would be in the Premier League. Not enough lower league shopping these days

Kevin Doyle is still in the squad? For some reason I thought he'd been dropped ages ago
