Ups & Downs 2017/18

by Winston Biscuit » 15 Jan 2018 14:10

It might be a bit early to start the annual Ups & Downs thread, but the league tables are exciting me so why the f not.

Bury look doomed at the bottom of League 1, and Rochdale have a big fight on their hands, aside from that the other 2 places are are 8 points between the next 12 teams so sure to be some nerve filled match ups. Loving Plymouth's turn around so far, as they are a team I look out for.

Luton & Notts County look strong for promotion from league 2, but then you have 3rd placed Accrington on 46 points and 9th placed Swindon on 44 points. Mentz incentive each weekend for the chasing pack! Would like to see Lincoln go up, maybe Accrington too. Luton are top scorers in England, they've had a few crazy scorelines so far this season.

Despite it being early and them still having a fighting chance I really can't see Forest Green surviving - and if they didn't would it be the first time a club promoted from the Conference had ever been relegated straight back ?

For the record I do hope they do survive.

Keep an eye out or Lincoln's results, having gone to uni there, and I am delighted to see they are in the hunt for back-to-back promotions.

Shows how good our 106 season was that Wolves are still going to have to go on a great run to get there. They need 45 points from 19 games to take the record, which is at least 14 wins if we allow them one defeat. Difficult to see them not going up though, 12 points clear of Cardiff in 3rd.

Brechin City have got 4 points from 21 games in the Scottish Championship, and will probably be relegated in March.

I thought this was another skateboarding back from the Netherlands attempt.

They are in severe financial trouble too. They are barely Brechin even....................

Coventry in 8th Vs Swindon in 9th this weekend. The winner could jump over the play offs straight into an automatic promotion spot

Blackburn who got over a dodgy start to the season could take 2nd place this weekend too, having beaten 2nd placed Shrewsbury last weekend

Does seem that we are heading for one of the more exciting relegation scraps of recent times. Just 5 points separating Swansea in 19th from Bournemouth in 10th.

With City's domination, Arsenal are actually closer to the bottom of the table than the top.

I am captivated by league 2 promotion. Luton at the top aside, it is all so close that each week a team outside the play offs can win and leap right over them into an automatic promotion place. Wycombe jumped from 9th to 2nd with a win this week, they all seem to be taking a turn at doing this too, which is nice.

If it is anywhere near this come the last couple of weekends of the season it will be immentz!

It's a great league for sure. Who is your League 2 team, Winston?

Coventry City have not finished in the top 6 of any division since 1969-70.

Heart Attack time for their fans if they make the play offs.

Even more interesting is what is going on in the Conference, where feasibly none of the teams in the bottom 4 relegation places could actually get releg8d at the end of the season. Macclesfield (top of the league when I last checked), Chester and Hartlepool are seemingly on a financial knife edge.

Apparently if Sutton, Bromley or Maidstone finish in the promotion places and get promoted, they will actually get relegated because the FA have told them they cannot have the 3g pitch. The alternitive is to spend about 300k ripping it up which they won't have.

Not to mention they are also having a 5 team play off system this season.

Fantastic. What a league.

Shame to see Hartlepool dissolve but then again it's all down to mismanagement.

I think the argument around 3G pitches is a bit of a farce.

Which is an absolute scandal btw. The Football League and the FA do not want "smaller sides" in professional football pure and simple. These clubs with the 3G pitches serve a massive purpose in their communities and provide kids with a place to play all year around.

Isn't it the Football League that have an issue with 3G? The FA allow them in the FA Cup and they have no jurisdicton over League 2 as it is a Football League competition.
