Bonzodog Draw made for 4th qualifying round of FA Cup today. Quite a few local sides still left. Maidenhead have a tough away game probably at Chippenham. Winchester have a plum away trip to Torquay although they may have fancied a home tie

I have tickets for a Tom Robinson gig in Southampton that Saturday, so I'm not going to be going. So tempted to bin the gig though.

- got to this - nice to arrive at approx 5-10' before KO, get a programme and a parking space inside the ground - crowd slightly disappointing but it is only the early rounds of the Trophy.
Bracknell coasted to a three goal lead - then eased up and allowed their somewhat limited hosts back in; courtesy of the ' aim it at the big lad up front' method.
- Fortunately the hosts come-back was staged too late to make a significant mark but in truth there should have been far more than 1 goal difference between the teams.

Bournemouth FC 6-0 Newquay

3rd game in my FA Vase journey this season and decided to take in a bit of a novelty fixture given that most Cornish sides dont enter the competition. Bit of a novelty ground as well. They have a small park all to themselves with a very secluded entrance. The only other way in is via the backgate of one of the surrounding residents. God knows how you found it without a sat nav.

Hosts are the original Bournemouth Football Club, I would assume that is why their more illustrious neighbours had to stick 'AFC' in front of their name.

Its supposed to be a heavily regionalised draw, so not quite sure what went wrong here. Must have been the longest journey faced by any team in this round.

Hosts never looked in trouble from the start and outclassed Newquay. I get the impression Cornish football isnt of the highest standard. Newquay have made a decent start in the South West Pennisula league (Step 6) but looked way below Bournemouth's level (Step 5).

My novelty fixture involved getting up at 6.30 for a trip to Spennymoor. Thankfully I wasn't driving.

We got rewarded with a 5-0 win for the home side, which was rather harsh on Ashton, who weren't ever that bad. They just didn't mark very well and conceded three set-piece goals in the first half. they then got picked off on the break after half time.

I do like northern non-league grounds. They tend to have a lot more character than southern ones. Far fewer Atcost bus-shelters round the pitch. Whether it's genuinely worthwhile giving up a whole Saturday to visit one though is a different matter.

.... if I do it properly it usually indicates lower level Cup competitions or local leagues below STEP06 that may be of interest to someone

.... at least that's the theory

FoC or A.N.other.....

What is the criteria for a club to go from TVPL into Hellenic, and what changes would one need to make? Reading YMCA have I think won the league 3 times in a row but not going up. Is it a big financial burden to do it?

... not completely sure but I would hazard a guess that it is a bit of a double-edged thingy:

i) Ground Grading: I doubt YMCA 'own' The Cauldron' over at Padworth - nor could they reasonably expect whichever local Council does (RBC or W.Berks maybe?), if it isn't private, to help out with any necessary upgrade to enable the club to 'step up'.
Indeed where they are now in the upper reaches of the TVL-P is not much below the playing standard of Hellenic Divs One. The issue there would be that this league has followed FA directives and demoted clubs with inadequate facilities for this season - so the chasm in off-field standards is ever widening. They are unlikely to try to reverse policy and admit a club with meagre facilities to their 2nd tier. Coming in lower down as Langley and Chalvey have done , would not be an advance for YMCA.
Thus they could opt for the short-term approach of a ground-share - Thatcham might be a sensible option.
Tadley is nearer but are in the Wessex League who don't permit 'lodgers'. That issue might go away were Tadley promoted this season to STEP04! 8)

ii) Travel : - should they try to step up to Hellenic or Wessex ( the only other feasible option) and find the necessary facilities , could the club establish enough funding to cover the travelling. Equally their players might object to longer trips and jump ship to another TVL club to stay at a level of personal comfort?

I'm basing a lot of my assumptions on the experiences of clubs who have previously stepped up from 'local' leagues only to find Grading, Travelling or inadequate Playing squads, millstones they cannot shrug off and eventually get dragged back down to where they came from (Marlow Utd , Chalfont Wasps to name two)

Even clubs with long-established Grounds have found the Hellenic a tough League to stay in (Hook Norton, Kintbury, Lambourn, Newbury, Abingdon Town) and not all playing related.

I s'pose Woodley Utd could be a model to follow but even now their grip on STEP06 is tenuous : Virginia Water, Penn & T, Wokkers & Emmbrook, Langley and Chalvey - the latter two are new in but all like Woodley, are barely subsisting thanks to what must be quite expensive ground-shares.
