Very difficult to judge our performance on Friday in the false atmosphere but regrettably once again Rashford has shown that he is not the finisher that we all thought he was going to be-what a couple of terrible misses.

I have said for a while that I don't think he's as good as the hype...you lot were blaming JM style of play which is pretty valid.

I just seem him as another 'Welbeck' tbh

I think he is a far better footballer than Welbeck overall but in terms of finishing he is that sort of player yes. I guess thats why Jose sees him more of a winger than a striker.

Early on he showed himself to be quite the natural and instinctive finisher though. Now, that might've just been because of lower expectations or just a good few finishes to set the tone, but it's more likely that his confidence is in tatters after being pulled apart by Mourinho and his mind games.

It's not so much Mourinho's style of play but his whole treatment of the player and the impact that has on him on and off the pitch.

They were two pretty awful misses though.

Not about Rashford, but this article is a good one about how different players might find things with England, and to an extent could apply to Rashford in many ways too.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2018/10/15/isnt-raheem-sterling-good-england-man-city/

I think it's a good summary of Sterling's supposed troubles with England. Away from the difference in style and quality of creative players, he's always struggled with his final ball and his finishing but I think it gets picked up on more England.

Lovely finish from Raheem Sterling. After a shaky start England are settling down and looking fairly decent.

This is brilliant stuff. 3-0 England, 2 for Sterling. Unreal.

Squeaky bum 2nd half there. Spain will complain about the pen they should have had against Pickford, what short memories!!!

Great work from Southgate and the team. An amazing result to win in Spain

A word on Pickford though.
2 of our goals came from his well placed kicks but ...
What was the dive before any shot came in? Somehow he ended up saving the shot that followed!
And the needless corner?
And the dithering that led to a penalty claim and nearly led to a goal?!
Quite the mixed bag.
It all worked out today but anyone else think he's a bit too erratic?

His "attacking" play was superb last night. England made 26 successful long passes and he was responsible for half of them. They were generally with purpose as well and not just hoofs.

The dive in the first few minutes was simply him trying to make himself as big as possible and gambling that Alonso would put the ball in that direction due to the defender on that post - it worked as if he hadn't done that he wouldn't have been there to have the ball hit him.

Only real blot was the potential pen, which probably was, though there was a tug on him before he tugged back so glad the ref let it go.

I think he is the sort of lad who will learn from his mistakes though, I will be shocked if he ever does anything like that again. I am delighted he is confident and sure of himself but if that mistake led to a goal I think Spain go on to draw that game. Hopefully the coaching staff gave him a rocket up his arse after the game and he changes his approach going forward.

Rashford was excellent last night.

I think people tend to forget he's still only 20 (just).

The average age of England's front 3 was under 23. All three of them seem like they've been around for ages but really there's still plenty of scope for development. Worth bearing in mind when you consider how much all 3 have been written off at times.

I thought we counter attacked bravely (Pickford's distribution was important to this even if he gives you the jitters at times) but also rode our luck somewhat by sitting off Spain a little too much at times. I guess t's natural when your 3-0 up against top level opponents to not want to risk too much but we really do need to find a way to break up prolonged spells of pressure with a threat of our own. Once Spain cut out Pickford playing it longer to Kane we really didn't have any way out.

It's one result against truly top level opponents so we shouldn't get too carried away but what was pleasing was that you can see there are plenty of areas to improve on and that this side is young enough to develop in those areas.

Cautiously optimistic about the future.

Agree with the rest of your post Vision, but especially this bit. I'm generally a pretty optimistic England fan and last night was an exceptional result, especially coming from such a young team, but I do think there's been a little bit of an over-reaction on how well we played. In the same way, I think there was a bit too much negativity on the performance against Croatia.

3-0 at half time in Spain is undoubtedly excellent, and you don't fluke that, but we were probably lucky not to concede a couple of times before went ahead. Sterling's finish, and the build up to it, was quality though and those moments change games, perhaps even careers, and after that and an excellent second it becomes a different proposition.

I think special mention should be made for Kane too. He's not looked his best for a while but last night, without scoring, he looked much better and was involved a lot more. Whether that's because of tactical changes or things just went for him I don't know, but it was good to see him involved and lot more and looking more dynamic with it.

Very promising stuff all round.

It has rightfully largely gone unnoticed given the scoreline and overall performance but did you see Harry Kane send the Spanish full back flying in stoppage time when the ball went out for a throw in? We need that sort of aggression and will to win, we have been missing that for many years now. Not only are we playing attractive football our players and most importantly our captain showed that you will not try to f*ck with us. Love it.

Yeh, good on Nacho for taking it like a man as well. Also thoroughly enjoyed the two crunching tackles from Maguire and Dier.

Delighted for Sterling and Rashford to get on the scoresheet, after taking a bit (or a lot in Sterling's case) of criticism recently. Was also really impressed with Chilwell.

I'm still a bit cynical of the whole premise of the Nations League, but I have to admit the competitive nature of last nights fixture was an absolute bonus. There's very little chance that it would've been as strongly contested if that was just another international friendly.
