I'd agree. At best Hoffenheim will sell him at break even. My guess is that would be £7m as a minimum taking into account any sell on fee to us. Probably even more than that TBH.

LOL @ Gylfi choosing to stay at Swansea if his fee is only £5 million. Any of the Prem clubs would go for him for that! Including US I presume!

SWANSEA City are increasingly optimistic that they will win the race to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson in a club-record deal.

Brendan Rodgers has made it clear to chairman Huw Jenkins that he wants Sigurdsson to be part of his squad next season after his spectacular Liberty loan spell.

And though a host of clubs are reportedly interested in the midfielder, Swansea now feel they are favourites to tie up a permanent move which is likely to be worth around £5 million.

Sigurdsson revealed over the weekend that he wants to play Premier League football next season and has told parent-club Hoffenheim that he does not want to go back to the Bundesliga.

And the suggestion is that even though there are other clubs reportedly keeping tabs on the situation, Sigurdsson is keen on extending his stay at Swansea.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle are among those who have been touted as Sigurdsson suitors.

But the 22-year-old has thrived at Swansea under Rodgers, the manager who gave him a first-team chance at Reading and has now given him the opportunity to shine in the top flight.

Swansea will not be able to compete financially should one of the English game's big guns bid for Sigurdsson this summer.

However, Sigurdsson knows he will be given the chance to continue building his reputation through regular first-team football should he end up signing a permanent contract at the Liberty Stadium.

Sigurdsson has been a regular ever since he arrived on loan for the rest of this season back in January, and has looked happy as the attacking prong in Swansea's midfield three.

He has given Rodgers's team a new dimension in the final third, scoring seven goals in 17 appearances while racking up the assists.

Sigurdsson would become Swansea's record signing, with the fee certain to eclipse the £3.5 million they splashed on Danny Graham last summer.

But the club are aware that they will have to spend a significant amount of money on bolstering their squad if they are to compete in the top flight once more next season.

Rodgers met with Jenkins last week to discuss transfer policy and declared himself happy with what he heard.

I like the way the paper speaks for Gylfi. I notice there isn't a single quote from him saying any of the stuff Mr Journo is pushing.

There is no way Hoff will take 5m after spending 7m on a player who is attracting interest from bigger fish.

If it's true, great news for us - he'd play for us over a grotty Welsh club any day and I can see Anton forking out 5m from loose change in his pocket.

In view of his performances since he went there though I would be surprised if none of the bigger Clubs came in for him.

If we offered exactly the same deal and both of us could afford his transfer fee, I'd call it about 55-45 in favour of Swansea. But I can't see them being able to afford his transfer fee, or being able to match our wage offer, should the TSI deal go through and should no big clubs come in for him... which I'd say puts us in the driving seat at about 65-35.

I don't think he would LWJ - Rodgers didn't play him that much when he was here - Brian brought him on - so I think he'd jump at the chance to come back and play under Brian in the Prem - plus he knows a few of our players well and if Church is still here, he'd be back like a shot imo.

Actually at the start of Rodgers reign he was young, untested, and unfit. First time I saw him play was when Rodgers gave him a game in the LC against Burton Albion (?) and he looked the best of our youngsters on show that day.

Rodgers also started to play him in the league but not every game as he clearly wasn't physically cut out for it. He got fitter and stronger as the weeks and months past and the rest is history.

Not that I disagree with the general sentiment - Swans v Royals is a no-brainer

One thing not been mentioned on this thread is that don’t his Icelandic club have a 10% sell-on clause as well? I’m sure Icelandic Stokie mentioned it at some point last season. With that and Reading having 30-40% sell-on profit (going by whats been mentioned in threads) I’ve always thought he’d go for around £12-14m, 10m would be the minimum I’d expect. Hoffenheim will want to get a reasonable profit on the 7m they paid for him, they certainly don’t seem desperate to get rid of him.

I did think we may have a buy back clause.. but even if we do I don’t see us getting in the way of Gylfi furthering his career should a Top 4 club come in for him.

Also, on what appears to be his own FB page I did see a comment from him last night (certainly claiming to be him anyway) in reply to a quote 'he' put up from Babbel (from what I remember it was "He's told me he wants to play in England. I told him there’s many things I would like"). The gist of it said I think that the options open to him are Reading and Hoffenheim, Swansea not able to afford him, but we can!

If Hoffenheim are just interested in increasing their financial return then a season long loan to RFC might suit everyone.

1/ If they sell now they will most likely only get 10-12M max
2/ A full successful season in the PL next time and his price could easily go to 20M plus
3/ If they loan him to Swansea again they might suffer from second season syndrome - so a new loan could be beneficial
4/ RFC have a financial incentive to make him an even more expensive player as we will get a cut of the much higher fee.

I would welcome him back even if it was for just one season. We could then spend all next season scouting for a replacement to bring in - assuming we survive.

When does his contract run out though? There's no point loaning him out for a season if it takes him too close to the end of his contract as it would probably negate the increase a good seasons form for us may cause.

eh? Why not? Swansea loaned him when he had even longer on his contract! I'd take a loan from beginning of season to January if necessary - just to get us some points and a safe-ish position!
