The Size of Signing-On Fees for Pog, Guthrie, McCleary...

I have an idea of how contracts are structured but no idea as to the typical size of signing on fees with free agents of the ilk of Pog, McLeary, Guthrie etc..

Simple people always see Free Transfers as saving lots of money but often you have higher wages plus a signing on fee. I have no idea if these are often 200k or £2million...?

Any ideas?

I would say we probably whacked a couple of million their/their agents way for the deal to happen.

Also, the good thing with Free Agents is the overall fee will be spread over the length of their contract as opposed to having to shell out a greater proportion upfront to pay the selling club and also the agent etc...

Signing on fee of a couple of million would sound about right...and then the talked about £30k per week...but I'm only guessing...

Totally in the dark. The only thing I can suggest is taking the difference between the £30k a week touted as being Pog's wage and the deal worth £60k a week over four years mentioned in the Sun.

Which would mean a signing on fee of around £5m for Pog. But that doesn't help you with other players.

I would assume a signing on fee is paid to the player upfront, or at least in a few installments, rather than over the course of a contract though.

Quite possibly, although remember the Sun never said we were paying him £65k a week, they said the whole deal was worth £65k a week. When you've got crap all to go on, it's better than nowt, even if it's as reliable as Dare to Dream..

That's QPR though, who seem to be belching money in all directions.
