Watched the tv programme Managing England the impossible job Apart from seeing reminders of all our World Cup failures (and being quite depressing) it also demonstrated to me that goalkeeping mistakes were very high on the list of reasons for previous dismissals. Bonetti, Shilton, Seaman, Carson, Green all culpable. Previous managers kept keepers beyond their sell by date or simply made wrong choices. I don't think anyone argues with Southgate's selections and by not taking Hart i think he has done his best to eliminate this issue.
it was also interesting to hear Capello's views that England always make excuses for failure and he described England’s 1966 World Cup victory as “the ghost smothering you with its white tentacles”.
