What happened to Surinam and Guyana? Let me guess they're going to be part of CONCACAF aren't they? Still make more sense to invite them though.

i can only surmise that Qatar's inclusion is some sort of FIFA plan to make it look like they're a footballing nation ahead of 2022

Copa America 2016 was held in the USA and included US, Mexico and 4 other Caribbean/central american teams. This sort of thing is not new news. Since 1993, its included other countries - Mexico have played in every iteration since then.

Japan couldn't make it one time relatively recently, so I imagine that's why they're here now.

Can't defend Qatar mind.

Surinam and Guyana are in CONCACAF, as is French Guiana. But I think French Guiana is an overseas department of France so there's a chance that they might do things differently.

With Japan playing Qatar in the Asian Cup final, the Copa is guaranteed to have the Asian champions and runner up in it as guests.

What's occurring with the scheduling of this tournament? It was held in 2015 and 2016 (both won by Chile), now in 2019, and again next year, with a gap then to 2024.

Argentina not having won this since 1992 is mental.

Just found the 2011 edition, where brilliantly, Paraguay got to the final without winning a game. They qualified third from their group by drawing all three games, and then beat Brazil and Venezuela (who were, strangely, also their group opponents) on penalties.

2016 was a celebration of the 100 year anniversary, so, yeah fair enough.

I think they've then decided to switch to even years, essentially to coincide with the Euros.

They recently did something similar with the ACN, so there were two tournaments in two years a short while back.

Yep, shifting it to every 4 years in even years, so fits in with the Euros. In fact it will run between the same dates - 12th June to 12th July.

There are even plans to increase the participants to 16 meaning 6 invitees, so could well see some European nations who just miss out on Euro qualification being invited over alongside the usual North American/Asia invites.

ACON was shifted to odd years as it is still run every 2 years but as it was moved to the summer, they had to shift to odd to avoid clashing with the World Cup every few years.
