By Far The Greatest Team The World Has Ever Seen

by Lighthouse » 19 Jun 2025 07:24

According to the Opta power rankings who have ranked every team in the world we currently sit 609th out of over 13,000. For context that is 1 place above Real Zaragoza. Other clubs ranked close by are Dundee and St Mirren. Blackpool are the closest English team above us and Bolton below us. The rankings are regularly updated. Not sure how the song will scan though.

I believe Auckland, who lost 10-0 to Michael Olise’s Bayern Munich at the World Apathy Cup recently are ranked somewhere in the 5,000s.

Actually we’re placed at 613th but equal 609th.

https://theanalyst.com/articles/who-are ... r-rankings

Luton (probably unsurprisingly) are the best of the current L1 sides at 238th (equal 236th). Stockport are best of the current L1 sides (374th, equal 373rd) that played at that level last season.

Hungerford Town, my local team, are 9038th but targeting the top 9000 this season….

Yep; for context, York City of the National League are at about 2,500 in that list; Bayern Munich are 6th.......

I don’t think there are 600 odd better teams than us in the world.

We're maybe similar standard to bottom third Eredivisie, bottom half Jupiler Pro-League, bottom third Portuguese, most of the Norwegian, Swedish leagues all bar the top two or three.

I think any German, Italian, Spanish, French, Argentine, Brazilian, top flight team would deal with us easily.

Probably pretty much all of the Mexican, Polish, Turkish, Russian, top flight better than us. Maybe the first few top few Greek, Serbian, Czech, Swiss, Austrian, Danish teams.

A handful of teams outside Europe or South America.

Add in the Premier League and Championship.

Does that add up to more than 600? Doubt it.

These are the teams around us.

Al Ain just lost 5-0 to Juventus in the CWC.

This is why the Club World Cup should include everyone.

We'd still be drawn away to Huddersfield in the first round.

I actually really like this idea. Make the CWC a straight knockout tournament. The top 1024 teams based on those rankings qualify and it's a random draw right the way to the final. The higher ranked team always gets to play at home. Would only need 10 weeks to play it.

At first I thought the title of the thread was a question.

The answer to which would be Brazil's World Cup squad of 1982.

Yes, definitely works. Much better than working out who can play based on coefficients from 2 years ago

This should actually get the current best teams into the final stages. Suggest cancelling all country’s domestic leagues for a season just to execute it properly as you can’t have a straight knockout as a big side might be cr@p on the day and go out of the competition and FIFA won’t like that as it might compromise their myriad of sponsorship deals.

It’s scary to think of STAR organising coach travel for our games in Brazil, Canada, Malaysia and Korea.

The live cup draw on tv would be something.

100% agreed. That midfield - Zico, Socrates, Falcao, Cerezo - wow! Perhaps only rivaled by the French in same tournament (Platini, Giresse, Tigana, Genghini) or in 1998 (Deschamps, Zidane, Petit, Vieira).
A shame that we could never get a proper tune out of Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes, Beckham.
