Team for AFC Wimbledon

by MouldyRoyal » 13 Aug 2025 09:59

So for the first time in ages, the team doesn't appear to pick itself, so who are you playing on Saturday?

For me (and assuming our usual 4-3-3):

GK: I am sticking with JP for his shot stopping but Stevens clearly has better distribution

RB: Harsh on Abrefa but Ahmed needs a shot for me
CBs: Only position without much choice at the moment, it's Stickland and Burns again.
LB: Ryan, since I am not yet convinced by Jacob and Dorsett hasn't looked up to speed yet (plus concussion etc)

CMs: Possibly the hardest decision with 5 players competing for 3 spaces and all bringing things to the table. I'd start Wing, Elliot and Doyle.

RW: Lane assuming he is fit, no brainer. Otherwise DK
ST: as much as I want M'OM to come good, Kelvin offered so much more last night and deserves a start through the middle
LW: Garcia, with DK off the bench. Linked up really nicely with Ryan

Although I'd love to see Ahmed get a chance, Abrefa has been our best player, no way he loses his place.

Agree. Ahmed gets at least 1 more LC game, at least 3 Trophy games and at least 1FA Cup game.

Plus, any games where Abrefa gets injured, or drastically loses form.

He should get a solid 10 - 15 starts this season. Which is a pretty good breakthrough season, without over-exposure.

Definitely need to be careful about making changes based on a game where both teams made 9/10 changes.

Or Ahmed gets the odd sub appearance on the hour mark? NH seems to like a fullback substitution just like Selles did.

Yeah let’s not rush Ahmed when it isn’t a problem position at the moment

Ryan for Jacob is a possible. Lane/MoM/Ehibhatiomhan looked promising to me on Saturday, happy to start with that.

Midfield tough. Have to start Wing and Savage really if fit. Not sure on that last one

I think I'd defs start with Doyle from last night, looks a really complete player, and maybe Kelvin up top and agree with comments above re Ahmed.

Just thinking back to Millwall game 2 years ago, I'm pretty sure Selles reverted to the old guard (Tom x2 Carroll etc) in the next game (Port Vale?) and then made wholesale changes the following game V Cheltenham.

Mods - do we need to merge this thread with Sutekh's usual match thread?

It is difficult not to agree with what has been said here. It is actually nice to have such problems. I will say that in my experience, managers tend to be more wedded to the players they are responsible for bringing in. The nightmare scenario for Noel would be to bring in Ahmed and Ryan with Kelvin through the middle and end up hosing AFC Wimbledon. I think the two youngsters have earned an appearance from the bench at least. It would be good for them and us if they got a great reception. This all depends on who is fit or not on the day.
As far as the midfield conundrum goes. I would imagine that Noel sees Doyle and Elliot as interchangeable, with Crawley guy and Savage as the same.
Probably starts O’Mahony to give him another chance. If we manage to fashion him one on the pitch, great.

I have a feeling we'll see more of Fraser away and Doyle/Elliott home.

Makes sense. More attacking at home with being more circumspect away.

I thought Garcia was brilliant last night but might be best to hold him back and play him off the bench.

I assume Wing will not be available. I think Ryan has looked the best LB this season so I would probably go:

Pereira
Abrefa (tough call as Ahmed was incredible last night)
Stickland
Burns
Ryan
Savage
Fraser
Doyle
Lane if fit or Camara if not
Kyerewaa
Ehib. (did really well last night in the first half)

We would have the luxury of bringing Garcia, O'Mahony, Elliott, Rushesha, Ahmed etc off the bench later in the game.
