Best RFC right winger of all time?

by SpaceCruiser » 12 Jun 2007 15:41

Here's the poll, vote away! The run down on all those exciting players are:

Michael Meaker

Arrived at Reading as a part-exchange which saw Simon Osborn go off to QPR in 1995 and played on the right wing for Reading until being released by Tommy Burns. Nicknamed the Meekon for some reason and also joined in the bunny hop celebrations with Carl Asaba for some reason which is unknown to this day.

Scott Taylor

An exciting player who rose through the youth ranks during the end of Ian Branfoot days, originally started out as a centre attacking midfielder, but got moved out to the right wing by Mark McGhee and played a large part in Reading's promotion from the third tier in 1993/4 and the play-off final the following season. Left to join McGhee at Leicester after that game, amid rumours that he left because he wasn't happy about being hit by Jimmy Quinn in training. There's a song for him that goes ooh aah Scott Taylor. Or something like that.

Jerry Williams

A player from the Ian Branfoot era, very well remembered for giving Kenny Sansom a torrid time when Reading played Arsenal in the FA Cup during the 1986/7 season. Was part of the Division Three championship winning squad in 1985/6 and most likely a part in the 13 wins run.

Anthony Rougier

Brought to the club by Alan Pardew from Port Vale in 2000, the big Trindad & Tobago player had some exciting skills but lack of goals. Still set up quite a few goals and scored two goals in the driving rain against Oxford United to send Reading to the top of the table. Was unfortunate to be remembered for falling over at Cardiff and inadvertently in the way of Barry Hunter's clearance which bounced off his head and into his own goal. Made up for it by helping Reading achieve promotion the following season and played one more season after that before being released on a freebie.

Darren Caskey

Primarily an attacking centre midfielder, who arrived at the club in 1995 to replace Simon Osborn for a then record fee of £700K from Tottenham Hotspur, he was moved out to the right wing position by Alan Pardew where he excelled and recorded a record haul of a few goals for a midfielder. Never mind that most of them were free kicks and penalties! After the play off final at Cardiff, he was released on a free. Suffered a broken leg during the Terry Bullivant reign, I think.

Glen Little

Super wing wizard who would bamboozle the opposition defenders with his quick thinking and foot work and also delivers some excellent crosses. Came on loan at the tail end of the first season back at second tier in 2003 and scored one goal. Steve Coppell obviously felt he could do a job and brought him back from Burnley permanently. Didn't score a single goal in the first season and then the following season enjoyed some excellent form, scoring a couple or so goals as well as setting up a few, helping Reading to a record breaking 106 points and the Championship. Injury prevented him from starting straight away for the first ever season in the Premiership, but when he was fit, he was able to force Seol out and reclaim his place. Probably should have been player of the year in the Championship winning season.

Sammy Igoe

Brought to Reading by Alan Pardew from Portsmouth at the end of the 1999/2000 season and starred in the following season, scoring a few nice goals, particularly against Oldham and Bury at home. Helped Reading achieve promotion the following season. Played a part in the first season back in the second tier before being released on a free.

Seol Ki-Hyeon

The South Korean had attracted attention with his displays at Wolves, which made Steve Coppell decide to splash out £1.5m for his services. Can play on either flank or as a second striker, though for the first ever season in the Premiership, he played mostly as a right winger largely due to Glen Little being injured. Played a large part in the come back against Middlesbrough on the first day of the season and scored cracking goals against West Ham and Sheffield United.

Little will win hands down, but Scotty Taylor remains a firm favourite in this household.

He was a "big up" destined to fail. But I still think he was an excellent player. ;)

Easiest one so far. Only those who have missed the last couple of years could possibly vote against The Magician.

Spacey, Caskey played in the middle you fool. I don't remember him ever playing on the wing. You seem to be getting him confused with David Beckham, who was also a passing and deadball specialist, but importantly, played for MANCHESTER UTD

I've gone for Meaker because I want him to get a couple of votes and Little is obviously going to win anyway.

Yes, he did in the middle for most of his Reading career, but you seem to have forgotten that he spent the last two seasons of his Reading career on the right wing, where he was so much better. How else was he going to fit into a midfield that had Peter Grant and Neil Smith?

why are some of these players on the shortlist? Not just for this one but all of them have had 'comedy' nominations. Rubbish, waste of time.

Well, there wasn't much nominations for the others. And nobody disagreed with my shortlist on the other thread.

Jerry Williams, Scott Taylor, Glen Little

is all you need for this thread, there may have been some from previous generations not mentioned. But the others as RFC's greatest ever right winger? LOL

Least you'd get a decent poll result each time with genuine candidates rather than people being 'funny' voting for someone dump.

Don't remember that in the slightest. To be honest I seem to have erased Grant and Smith from my memory other than as names.

Maybe I was at uni for that season.

Sure, but I needed 8 candidates for each position to make it an interesting debate and subsequent voting. Are you arguing (Vision excepted) against any of the winners so far?

That was mostly during the 1999/2000 season after Tommy Burns got sacked. I think Alan Pardew decided that since Caskey couldn't defend properly and he needed some steel in the middle. So he had Grant and Smith in the middle and moved Caskey to the right wing. I don't think there was any decent right wingers at that time, probably why Rougier and Igoe were brought in during the close season. Thinking about it, wasn't Rougier actually playing on the left rather than the right, which makes his place in the poll a bit of a joke?!?

Not really although i think there should be a place for Reading's all time appearance maker, that Gooding should be in there somewhere, maybe death instead of Hislop.

It's always up for debate, i'm just being grumpy but having Michael Meaker or Rougier (love you for the 2 v Oxford) as possibles for Reading greatest ever winger, fcuk me we aint that shit.
