Adrian Popa Signing Confirmed

30 January 2017
By Hob Nob Anyone?

The club have confirmed the incoming transfer of 28 year old Romanian winger Adrian Popa. The deal was widely reported in Romanian media last week after the club made revised bids for the player who was due to be out of contract in the summer. An initial bid of 500K Euros was turned down, but the Royals went back with an increased bid of 600K Euros which was accepted by Steaua Bucharest.

Popa has an impressive CV with 21 senior caps for Romania, three league titles with Steaua Bucharest and appearances in the Champions League and Europa League. Popa signed for Steaua in the summer of 2012 and went on to make 113 appearances for his side, hitting 16 goals in the process. His last appearance was in December when he scored the only goal in a 1-0 home win. He has also scored two goals for his country so far this season, including what turned out to be a crucial late goal in a 1-1 draw with Montenegro in a World Cup qualifier.

The confirmed signing of Popa is not expected to be Reading's final activity in the transfer market with Reading boss Jaap Stam hinting at a couple of likely signings last week. Popa is also seen as a good deal on transfer fees for the club, leaving money spare from the 10.4 million transfer and contract pot that was loaned by the club's potential new Chinese owners earlier this month. Fans will be hoping for one further signing to join new players Tiago Ilori and Adrian Popa, before the transfer window closes tomorrow evening at 11pm.

another winger???

Capped 21 times by Romania since 2012

25 goals in 210 league games for Steaua, very roughly an average of around 1 goal every 8 games

28 years old and in last 6 months of contract

Not to be confused with Adrian Popa, 26, who is a Romanian centre back for Alcala

Another winger because Reading don't do strikers any more

Apparently bid of €600,000 has been accepted and he'll arrive tomorrow!

Good greif.

Has Brian not learnt anything this season?

File under

Dennis
Mendes
Gravenberch
Wiser
VDB
And that keeper

Awful signing. Wasting money like this is rediculous.

Romanian guy at the gym says he's a good player, highlighting his tenacity and work rate as a standout quality.

I suppose worth a risk at that sort of price. When you see the prices quoted for players in this division can see why you'd look abroad

Actually quite like Rakels. Disappointed he got that nasty injury, thought there was some potential there, and hopefully still is.

No, I've never heard of him either.....

Brian didn't sign Rakels
VDB has had some very solid performances.
Spelling ridiculous the way you did is pretty ridiculous, especially considering just about everything has spell check these days.

Will apparently be on around £13k a week, doubling if promoted.

Not sure how much truth there's is in that though.

Excellent news. It's been a long time since we've had an Adrian (Adie) at the club.

Anyway, player has confirmed on his Facebook/Instagram and it appears Steaua have announced in their official site too:

Welcome Adie Popa!

My Steaua Bucharest supporting friend has described him as the Romanian Hal Robson-Kanu.

I would be very surprised if

A) Pepe actually has a Steaua supporting mate
B) if said mate exists, he actually knows who Hal Robson-Kanu is
C) that Popa is anything like Hal Robson-Kanu at all

Right wing

Our first Romanian (so cue all the Dracula connections etc.) in action

Actually looks useful but as we know it's just the highlights and he's a winger....

Ready for Brum??

No of course not!

Wonder if he'll take the no. 77 shirt at Reading

Is this the end for Garath

Seems he is now signing for Brighton

Quality of defending likely to be a big step up. Looks to have great acceleration and be keen to try to beat people.

But for some reason has a touch of the Royston's about him for me.

Still, most of our best transfers have been players more intended for the next season rather than making an instant hit.

Wingers can be a bit hit & miss by nature.
At least he's been playing regularly at both club & international level which is a positive.
Always the risk it may take a while to settle in but that's no different to any other signing.
We'll see

from those clips he looks very useful, like he's the answer to the old question of what Glen Little would have been like if he had pace.

Excellent turn of pace and quick feet which, on paper, should make him a very good Championship winger.

Not sure where the Drenthe comparisons come from.

Compare those clips with some of the moves Beerens was doing on Tuesday and you could think we have a mirror image !
Is this one of those 'opportunistic' signings, or is it giving us the option to cash in on McCleary in the summer if we don't make promotion ?

With all this workrate we're hearing about, could he be a wing back?

Stam came as a die hard 4-3-3 man, but Conte seems to have convinced everyone that 3-5-2 is the way. Surely Illori and Blackett are signed to play in back 3s too.
