Oxford Joins Reading: Not The Thames Valley Royals

31 January 2017
By Hob Nob Anyone?

Oxford joining Reading is a nightmare headline from 1982 when Oxford United chairman Robert Maxwell announced his plans to merge Oxford with Reading. Thankfully that all fell through, Reading survived and went on to grow from strength to strength. We are now in the position to attract quality young players from the Premier League - such as Reece Oxford who completed his loan move to Reading this afternoon.

Oxford joins the Royals until the of the season from West Ham United. Oxford became Reading's second confirmed incoming transfer of deadline day, following Jordon Mutch who signed from Crystal Palace on loan earlier in the day. Oxford, who is unlikely to find his name printed on any replica shirts this season, has been signed to provide cover in the centre of defence where injuries have taken their toll on Jaap Stam's squad. Ilori has been out injured, McShane has been playing with a wrist injury, and Joey van den Berg picked up an injury this week. Oxford will be expected to come straight into the side next weekend.

Oxford made his West Ham debut aged just sixteen at the start of last season after becoming a professional with the Hammers. He went on to make 12 appearances last season, including 7 in the Premier League (3 starts and 4 from the bench). His opportunities have been more restricted this season and he has appeared just twice - both in Europa League fixtures. His move to Reading should give him plenty more first team action as he looks to build his career.

Meanwhile, yesterday's new signing, Adrian Popa who arrived from Steaua Bucharest on a permanent deal has managed to receive his international clearance. The clearance means Popa is cleared to play, and not only travelled with the team to Birmingham City for tonight's League fixture, but has been named on the bench and could now be set to make his Reading debut.

The final possible transfer of a busy transfer deadline day is the arrival, also on loan, of Bournemouth striker Lewis Grabban. Unlike some of the rumours during the day this one seems a strong possibility with the highly rated player unable to get match action at Bournemouth.

Twenty nine year old Grabban moved back to Bournemouth nearly exactly a year ago for 7 million pounds but his return spell has been dramatically less successful. In his return spell he has been restricted to having most of his match action from the bench and has scored just one goal from 22 appearances. Despite his lack of success in the Premier League Grabban was hugely successful in the Championship for both Bournemouth and then Norwich - and could be exactly what we need to keep us up at the top of the table.

Apparently we are trying to hijack his loan move to Forest. According to daily mirror journo on twitter.

I'd assume this would be to get some cover in defence.

He was reported as a midfielder by the paper I read the Forest rumour in
(I thought he was a cb?)

So how will it feel to have 'Oxford' on the back of a royals jersey :P

Has played in both positions but I think he is viewed as a CB.

Reece OXFORD!? With a name like that, he shouldn't be anywhere near our club!

We might as well sign Reece Aldershot!

Surely all it would say would be ******

Thanks to the profanity filter on HNA, if we had to reference him we can just use some choice 4 letter swear words to save typing out those extra 2 letters in his surname.

Might as well go the whole hog and throw Reece Swindon in on the deal too.

100% yes based on purely nothing but MOTD highlights and early last season hype.

We do need some cover with Ilori out.

With Illori out and Cooper on loan elsewhere, deal makes sense if we are now playing 3 CB's.

Not sure what it says about Dickie's chances of getting into the team though. Would rather we give one of our own a chance but Oxford does look very good on limited evidence.

We could always offer Dickie to Forest on loan....

Could sign Stephen Warnock at the same time ... so we could have W@nker on the back of our shirts.

not against this, but I'm not quite sure where he would fit in at the moment. Esp as the crappy mail suggests he wants to 'tie down a first 11 spot'

DS: "Don't expect much coming in today. We might have a couple of young players going out on loan. @Reeceoxford_ might be going to Reading."

With only McShane and Moore the only fully fit centre backs at the moment it makes sense....don't reckon we'll see the new boy or VDB till end of March

Just heard David Sullivan talking to Alan Brazil on talksport and it sounded pretty certain that Reece Oxford would be joining us today.

He said Reading are very lucky to be getting Reece because he is the best 18 year old centre back in the country.

Brilliant signing for all parties. We need defensive cover if we want to use three at the back & he can slot straight in with Joey & Tiago injured for a few weeks. :D

Talked up a lot last season and definitely looks the part.
He is good enough to play a holding midfield role at this level if that is the way Stam goes with the team set-up.
A positive move if hopefully it comes off-it also says to me that Stam
It also says to me that Stam might think that he has made a rickett with Blackett (almost poetic eh?).

I thought Blackett was decent on Saturday. For me he just isn't a LB. Like him in a back 3/5

Someone tweet him. Say it's either "Reece" "Oxf*rd" or he can go home.
