Spotter. One of Steve Francis's first few games for Reading, so I am trying to work out who the opposition is.

Recalling team lineups from the 60s/70s/80s/90s - no problem. Trying to remember what I did last week - fu cked.

The opposition player looks like Pat Crerand-we played Man Utd that year in the Watney Cup final but IIRC it was a sunny day.
I bow to Ark's good memory and if it was Port Vale I do remember a game against them having a delayed start as they were late arriving-could it have been that day because of the weather?
I used to really like both of the Wagstaffs-different types of player but both classy.

Thinking of wet weather games what a cracker that season at home to Villa when we lost 5-3.

You're right - it was a sunny day but the terraces were jam-packed solid!
I don't know who the Crerand look-a-like is though.

Think he looks more like Billy Bonds.

SHORT AND CURLY lee Payne

Apparently we paid £60,000 for him!

And I can't even remember who he was!

I think he came from Newcastle if memory serves me correct.
Might be wrong though

I also cannot remember him doing much.

Timmy Here you go Mr Spizz. Front and Back Cover of Steve's Testimonial. Not scanning the internal 22 pages, not sure there's the interest for one and secondly (relatively) modern programmes don't bend so well. As a bonus I've included a youthful Martin Allen appearance pictured centre as it was in the same box. 9 boxes down out of 10! Might do the Arsenal 1935 Cup game sometime too.

There's that Mark Smith again...

Think he did come from Newcastle - one of Branfoot's panic buys soon before he was sacked.

Scored in his home debut after a minute I think and did nothing else I can remember during time here.

His best game by a mile was away at Chesterfield when we came from 2-0 down and staring relegation to Division 4 in the face, to win 4-2.

I used to play football with Trevor Hemming (see schools photo) every weekend at Arthur Newberry Park. Lived in the Rodway road area iirc.

Fantastic goalie, but I always managed to put a hatful past him :? .

Was at school with Ted O'Leary (captain). Quite an achievement to get to that level as in those days we did not play football at RS. He went on to play for Reading reserves.

1929-30 scrap book, in which someone has cut out newspaper pics, hand coloured them and neatly assembled into the album.

The Royal Speaking of which who was the last known player/manager
Tommy Burns played in one reserve game as we didn't have enough players fit, He said they would have played the goalkeepers in outfield if they had thought of it.

I regret not buying a programme for my first ever game in 1987, Reading v Gillingham. Senior and Horrix scored, not that I remember too much about it, however I chatted to Trevor Senior a few years ago and he told me all about the game - incredible memory of every game he played. I did check on the internet afterwards to make sure he wasn't blagging it.

His memory is as bad as yours! Can't find a 1st team game that matches your description of year / scorers / opponents.

Yeah, also drawing a blank here. If you assume he got the scorers and year right, but opposition wrong (we only ever scored 2 goals against Gillingham once in the 80s, and that was 1982/83) it could be this:

1986/7:
LC R1(2) Bristol Rovers H W 4-0 [6-1] Senior 3, Horrix

That was Horrix's only goal that season and Sir Trev left in the summer of 1987 so tbh that year looks suspect.

Other than that it's any two (or even three) from: wrong year, wrong players and wrong oppo!

Hmm... maybe my memory is playing up, I have the details noted down at home somewhere so will dig them out.

Couldn't have been calendar year 1987 as we were in the old Div 2 for 86/7 and 87/8, whilst Gillingham were in old Div 3. We didn't play them in any cup comp in 87 either.

Plus I don't remember winning too many games against Gillingham at Elm Park during the 1980s.

Going through my shed today, I came across these from the Southbank Turnstile Entrances. I'm pretty sure that somewhere I've also got some with Network Southeast on them.
