Adkins interview on BBCRB 24/01/14

by SPARTA » 24 Jan 2014 08:08

Did anyone catch it and want to summarise for us?

All I've are comments about Adkins wanting new signings, he wanted to keep Sharp and that SJM looks a mug for his promises a month ago of money being there in January...

Maguire Adie has just reported that Adkins said the chances of signing anybody during this transfer window are very low due to the situation with the club's ownership.

Must be on the lines of this

Reading FC takeover saga halted Billy Sharp swoop

And Royals boss Nigel Adkins admits he doubts he will be able to make any signings before next Friday's transfer deadline

Nigel Adkins missed out on signing Billy Sharp due to uncertainties surrounding the ongoing takeover saga at Reading.

Royals’ boss wanted to extend the striker’s stay after his loan spell from Southampton ended on January 2.

But with no funds to play with, Adkins had to watch as Sharp rejoined Doncaster Rovers on Wednesday for the remainder of the season.

“Everyone knows what high regards I’ve got for Billy,” said the Reading manager. “He’s done a fantastic job for me wherever I’ve been.

“Would we have liked him to stay with us? Of course we would have done.

“But while the ownership situation is in the position it is, it wasn’t possible.”

Adkins added: “For us to be successful I wanted as many goalscorers as we could have and we know he’s a proven goalscorer.

“So it’s a shame, but I really wish him well and I’m pleased that he’s now going to play regular football.

“We’d have loved it to be with us but he’s gone to Doncaster and that’s great for him.”

Adkins faces a similar problem with Chris Baird.

The Northern Ireland midfielder’s four-month contract with Reading expired on Monday .

He is still training with the club and was continuing to receive treatment yesterday on an injured ankle.

But Adkins admits he will not be able to offer Baird, or any other player, a new deal.

“Chris is with us at the training ground now. He’s still continuing his rehabilitation,” said Royals’ boss.

“But his contract is up and we’re not in the position to offer him a new one at this moment in time.”

He added: “It’s been well documented what’s going on behind the scenes at board level.

“Whilst that’s going on it makes it more challenging for us.

“We’ve not brought anyone in during the window and there’s just over a week of it left.

“Are we going to bring anyone in before it closes? At this moment in time, while the ownership situation is the way it is, maybe we’re not in a position to do that.”

Something that irks me about Adkins is this thing he does where he asks a question to himself and answers it straight away.

Do I find it annoying? Yes I do.

Heard the interview. He might just as well have said "Hi Adi, we're not going to sign anyone in January, bye". The rest was filled with annoying cliches that makes the bloke the bellend that he is.

And some people still won't accept that Saint John Madejski is damn strong on the talk but too often lacking in the walk.

Just a month ago he was on the radio assuring Dellor, more than once, that funds would be available for Adkins to use this window. Less than a couple of weeks later, the warning signs were already flashing with the club's strange statement that they would 'talk to Saints in the next week or so regarding their plans for Sharp'.

So how does the 'substantial bid' for Hobbs fit in? Well it certainly wasn't the first time that we have reportedly made substantial bids when it subsequently transpired that there was precious little chance of the deal ever going through. Or maybe we just got some form of thanks for agreeing to help talk up the fee for Hobbs!

anyone believing the club makes 6 figure bids, hoping they wont come off is literally mental.

Manager Nigel Adkins spoke in depth to the local media this week about the tactics of regaining possession and how our whole team contributes defensively.

The boss discussed his strategic approach to the game, which gave us a thumping win over Bolton, the first time in almost 35 years that we have scored seven goals and winner of the LMA performance of the week award.

He said, "[Our approach is] Can you get the ball back as quickly as possible, so you can be effective when you've got possession.

"To do that, there's different ways to win the ball back. You can use a high press, and we've always tried to make their goalkeeper kick the ball because we believe our centre halves can win headers. You lock on, and that way the opposition don't control the tempo of the game. If you force the goalkeeper to kick it, it becomes a sharing ball, and who can land on it first - 'win the first one, land on the second one.'

"But sometimes teams can get out, for example Brighton were very good at breaking that block, so then you change from an attacking press to a mid-third block. You set traps, try to force the opposition into a blind alley and get the ball off them. Then with your pace you can counter-attack into the space that's been created.

"There's different ways to do it, likewise you can end up with a defensive third block and the spaces are even more narrow, so the opposition can't get through."

The Royals have employed the same starting XI for the last two games, and Adkins continued, "Having a consistent shape helps, but first and foremost you need a good defensive resolve, for which you have to work hard. When you win the ball, you have the chance to control the game.

"I've said before about Pav and Alfie leading from the front, their workrate has been exceptional. So with a front two working hard, then the two chucky eggs on the outside, the wider players. We're not asking them to be right out on the wing [defensively], they can come in and narrow the spaces with the middle two. It gets us up the pitch and the whole team contributes."

And of course, fitness plays a key role. "We analyse things in depth here. We want to out-run the opposition, we've talked about a periodised training programme with players getting fitter and stronger as the season goes on.

"Last week we were very clinical, scored seven good goals and the hard work on the training ground bore fruit."

Last but not least, Adkins received the LMA award with the whole group of players behind him, and said, "It was good. The award was there, the Sky cameras came down and took a picture with everybody together which is important – it’s not about individuals at this football club, it’s a team performance award and many, many people have contributed to that. I was pleased for the players."
