Adkins - Pros and Cons

by Lacoste » 28 Sep 2014 17:04

People may think this is a knee-jerk reaction to a pretty poor performance but a point gained, however I just get the feeling this will never work for Adkins here. Time is ticking on and we don't ever seem to improve results. So inconsistent.

Pros

Fairly attractive football
Always positive
Has got teams promoted in the past

Cons

Talks shit
His teams can never defend
Average in the transfer market
Has never built a team at this level (Pardew built the Southampton one)
Poor tactically (substitutions etc)
He doesn't learn

At this moment I'm probably 60-40 against him. The only reason it isn't 70-30 is because of the injury crisis which by the way I believe is partly down to the way they're coached.

Not saying we should get rid however he is running out of time IMO. The team he had to pick from last season should have done better than they did.....this is a very sluggish period for RFC and maybe, just maybe a change would change our fortunes.

Who would be your pick if we were to replace him?

Ill probably get slaughtered for this however I welcome opinions.

Average in the transfer market is a bit harsh. Not exactly been given much of a chance and I'd say out of the 5(?) he's brought in this season, 3 have been a success, one hasn't played due to injury and the jury is out on the other one (Mackie).

pros:
positive person
attractive football when he brings in his players
can bring in decent players in the transfer market even with our strict budget
history of promotion
good record
plays and trusts in our youth players
players trust him
decent at making in game decisions
good at developing players

cons:
defenses are typically leak more goals than id like
rarely is bit to positive (hardly ever a truly bad thing but sometimes it is a bit annoying)

Pros:

What others have said, plus...

As long as he's manager we won't have to worry about being managed by the soon to be unemployed Pardew again.

Well I was expecting a lot more focus on off-the-ball movement than we have been seeing and most in games I get the feeling that the opposition are actually better skill-wise than us. That being said, we don't go and blow tons of money of new squads every year (excluding the TSI debacle) only to go and under-achieve, so I don't think we can feel too hard done by. If you don't expect a lot, you won't be disappointed.

Whilst you could argue that we should expect more from him, more from the players etc, there's actually very little else to do in reading on a weekend, so you may as well just take it as it comes and have a laugh.

However, back to the pros-cons list, He does have a painfully awkward faux smile.

look lacoste, 3-4 games this season already he has made decisions in the mdidle of the match that have won us points from losing positions or helped us hold out the win. the first time he oxf*rd up this season was today (arguably) and everyone forgets his exploits earlier this season.

Yeah that would be awful. The manager who bought Sidwell, Harper, Shorey, Little (on loan), Marcus etc.....initially the likes of Butler, Cureton, Watson, Mackie, Solako and Picked up Lambert for £1m from league 1 and many other great signings. The manager who knows how to get out of this league and build successful sides that perform well even after promotion.

He is a bit of a cock, but at this level he can work wonders on bargain buys and knows the market very well. Like I have said in other posts, he built that Saints side for Adkins and with all water now under the bridge (who wouldn't leave for a bigger club for more money where you can make a name for yourself), I would welcome him back.

Lacoste Has never built a team at this level (Pardew built the Southampton one)

Erm...

Core of Adkins' Southampton side that won promotion: Richardson, Fox, Schneiderlin, Cork, Hammond, Lallana, Guly, Lambert, Sharp. Fonte, Hooiveld and Kelvin Davis also featured regularly but were pretty crap.

Signed by Pardew: Richardson, Lambert, Hammond, Fonte
Signed by Adkins: Sharp, Fox, Cork, Hooiveld
Both: Guly

Every one else pre-dates Pards.

Adkins also recruited Steven Davis, Rodriguez, Ramirez, and Clyne, who all played important roles in surviving relegation.
As a comparison, McDermott's promotion side contained five regulars he'd signed - Gorkss, Harte, Legs, Le Fondre and Roberts. He was at Reading for longer. Coppell's team contained five players who pre-dated him. I am not raising this as a way of saying "McDermott is better than Adkins", merely that it is far from unusual for a manager to "build" a side primarily from players signed by other managers.

Very odd timing considering the relative success of the season thus far, the challenges he's had to face in terms of injuries and instability, and the obvious progress in terms of footballing ability at the club.

It's a shame that some continue to be so negative about NA even after an entertaining game of football against a side in great form. A real shame.

cons

i dont like him, cant warm to him at all, and he is way too over optimistic / positive

pros

i like the way we are playing football this season, it is enterprising, we look like we will score goals, and yeah we'll probably concede a fair few too, but I am being entertained most games and that's really what I pay my money for
i like the way the kids are able to progress through, even though necessity has been the mother of invention to an extent

Cons:
- forced Kebe out
- overly positive ie after derby he talked about how gr8 it was to see Guthrie get some playing time instead of losing 2-0
- pats his subs on the bum - possible homo
- has an infuriating style of clapping
- hoofball
- no improvements in the past year and a half
- horrific defensively
- has a hairstyle of a 10 year old
- never answers the real questions in interviews
- he's not Brian
- injury record
- appears to have memory issues or is the slowest learner ever
- abysmal record at coming from behind (probably not cumming from behind though)
- terrible record for us including games like the Barnsley H and Huddersfield H ones
- described Blackmans performance today as 'outstanding'
- talks absolute crap

Pro's & Con's:
- uses young players (becuase of our injury record under him)
- he's not Brian
- hates Drenthe (didn't use him properly)
- we beat his saints team 3-1 (he lost 1-3 at home to reading)

Pro's:
- random good performances
- good record previous to us
- he's not Brian
- he won't be here this time next year
