No Fixed Abode 1 point off the play-offs = Clarke sacked
11 points off the play-offs = Under McDermott

You've really upped your game with that level of analysis.

But the club are better off under Brian.

Yep, I am much happier with nice guy Brian McDermott and his successful track-record in charge than that duplicitous failure Clarke, thanks for asking 8)

The thing I've found most disappointing with the return of Brian is how little positivity and unity it's caused amongst the fanbase. Frankly, I'm astonished.

I was critical of his style of football at the start of the season he got us promoted. I was heavily critical of his performance in the PL. But I'm staggered at how many are actively against him and have been since his return.

I know it's a tiny minority that's just very vocal, but it's still far bigger and more negative then I expected. I'd really hoped his appointment would unite us and give us somewhere to build from in the stands as well as un the squad. Sadly not.

And he's not even had an actually bad run yet. Or a heavy defeat. Or made any signings. Or even managed 10 games!

I dread to think what'll happen if we get beat by 3 or more, or go 5/6 without a win!!

Once again, we were 7 points off the play offs when Brian took over, not 1. Nice try.

Only time will tell though Floyd whether you're better off. If you finish in the play-offs this season then I'll say you are as you were right in the mix not so long ago.

Weren't we also 4 points off the play offs before we played again after Clarke's sacking? We were only 1 point off when he was sacked because we played early due to Sky?

Not impressed in the slightest. Some odd team selections, leaving the likes of Quinn out. HRK continues to get a game up front. His tactics are as you were; he's clearly not developed in that sense. I like the guy, I just don't want him managing here. It is a backward step imho and he'll do well to last the year! The pressure is already showing.

Reading were 1 point off the play-off when Clarke was sacked. They're now 11 points off. I didn't say 'when Brian took over'.

Deary me genome.

What's your point then if you are not criticising Brian?

Clarke was sacked because his job was untenable following the Fulham saga. Howe was just waiting for the right run of results to get rid of him. We would likely be in a similar position now if he had stayed. But I'd much rather have a bloke who knows and cares about the club in charge than someone who loans in a bunch of players who don't really care, and who turns his head at the first opportunity. He was as classy as his beloved Chelsea.

When Steve Coppell took over someone else's team in Oct 2003 it took him a while to get things going right - for instance six weeks after his arrival Reading lost 3-0 in three straight matches, including a dire home defeat to Wimbledon on Boxing Day.

Good thing no-one those days expected an incoming manager to get everything absolutely perfect from day one.

I'm more astonised that you're astonished! Half the fanbase wanted him sacked. They're hardly going to sit there thinking it's a great idea bringing him back! And he's done absolutely nothing yet to prove them wrong!

Don't know much about football if you expect to see instant improvement during a managers first few games

How many points did Clarke pick up in his first six?

And equally you don't know much if you don't expect an instant improvement. Quite often new managers have a placebo effect.
