Away fans that surprised you

by bobby1413 » 25 Sep 2016 22:57

This isn't about numbers, it's more than that, I mean which fans really surprised In relation to what you expected. Either good or bad.

In recent times only one really sticks out for me and that's Everton. We played them last year in the cup. Prior to game I thought it would be a raucous lively away end, filled with mental scousers chanting non stop

Instead we had 4000 Everton fans sat down with hardly a noise. I can't even recall them singing at all.

My work colleague who supports Everton was in the away end and the next day said how poor it was.

Any others?

Surprised me? I always think Leeds sound quieter than they should, though admittedly they haven't had much to be excited bout when they've played us of late.

Beyond that felt West Ham were disappointing, Millwall always fell short as well.

As for teams in our league at the moment beyond Leeds? Can't think at the top of my head. Didn't make much of Newcastle last time they were in the champ... I honestly can't think of many that surprise me by being shit as opposed to the other way around, for example I thought Huddersfield were excellent yesterday.

As far as home crowds I was always disappointed with Wednesday considering the numbers. Again, thought Newcastle were awful at their place earlier on, and they won 4-1!

I don't really take too much interest in other people's support because at the end of the day I respect those who have bothered to turn out, and by and large ours is normally pretty mediocre in comparison one way or another.

The worst are the ones that always bang on about how great their fans are, and then fail to sell out the away end and spend most of the game sat on their hands. Naming no names.

Changed thread title so that fans that surprised you for the better can be included. I agree, thought Huddersfield were really good Saturday - I know their top of the league (or were), but I just felt they were good anyway and louder than I expected. A good turnout too.

Always found Sunderland fans hugely disappointing both home and away, just so quick to let their heads drop.

Arsenal. Shambolic home, away & at Wembley. Can't say it really surprised me though.

I was quite surprised when Bristol City quite literally raped Elm Park in 84. They tore the place a new one.

This makes a good read if you are interested, you search the word Bristol on the page "The Bristol City
game is only about the third time I have seen the Police lose control
in a decade of watching games, and it's the only time I've seen
policemen being beaten up - it's a rare occurance."

Plymouth. Absolute mentals. Went to QPR with a chum (QPR fan hence why I was there) Plymouth at home. It was carnage just getting Into the ground. A load of cider addled lunatics chucking pasties at the police.

They even had a ginsters flag.

Thought Fulham's away support in 2007 and 2008 was surprisingly decent.

Everton last year as already said was poor. Liverpool I thought was extremely disappointing for the "best fans in the world".

I agree. For a big club they are pretty pish poor. Also boring when they do sing... "arrseeenal, arseenalll arsenal etc....".

I thought Cardiff would be louder and also would travel in greater numbers - that is based on the last two times we played them. Was it Cardiff about 5 years back that got on the pitch and horses were sent on?

Yep
Wan't it Wigan? - I may be getting muddled up, I rememeber a midweek playoff semi that had everything, last minute winner, a pitch invasion, horses on the pitch, a balloon invasion, brilliant atmosphere, floodlights on.

The Cardiff one definitely happened, think it was the 1-1 where they scored what seemed like a late winner, only for us to get an even later equaliser through Federici.
