The thing is, as he's been confirmed and not confimred, what are we to believe?

All has been said I'm sure but I doubt Stam would sign a player he has previously worked with without knowing he has the ability (or potential) to play in the Championship.
Whether he will succeed here or not will remain to be seen but I have every confidence in our transfer teams ability.

My Dutch mate says that he is a good goalscoring midfielder but with other midfielders such as Schöne, Van de Beek, Nouri, Ziyech and Frenkie de Jong not much room left at Ajax.

Let us not forget that this is the same Ajax side that reached the final of Europa League last season - not quite being good enough to make their first team in no way indicates he's a bad signing for us at this level.

Illori - not quite good enough for Liverpool
Moore- not quite good enough for Leicester
Blackett - not quite good enough for Man Utd
Kermorgant - not quite good enough for Bournemouth
Swift - not quite good enough for Chelsea
Beerens - not quite good enough for Hertha Berlin

Bit of a pattern of recent signings. I'll take a player who is not quite good enough for Ajax if he does as well as these guys have....

And to quote Jaap Stam, he's got a good personality.
“He will need to learn and adapt to the game over here of course, but he is a young, very promising player with a good personality. He is quick, technically good and has good stamina – and he is capable of playing in midfield, up front or in the wide or wing back positions. So I’m pleased to have him with us here in Reading.”

the more I think about this one, the more I like it actually

Should fit straight into the system, and hopefully give us some of the pace we were lacking last season. Swift, while excellent early season clearly dropped off, and we were carrying him a bit at times - to have an alternative would be great

in terms of quality - I think you could compare to someone on the verge of the first 11 at maybe a 7th or 8th placed prem team - and you certainly would not be picking up someone there for a small figure

Seems to me that he could also be a back up winger if we're short! He can make some good passes into the box!

Snowflake Royal First of all, welcome to the club. You've got to assume Tev and Jaap know what they're doing having been here a full season and knowing the league he comes from. I quite like the approach of buying younger players with potential and maybe giving them a bit part in their first season whilst they settle and then see if they can play a big role the next year.

On the other hand, I'm always wary of players who are described as being able to play in lots of positions. Pick a position and excel in it, don't be competent in five. That doesn't help us. We have decent depth, we need to improve the first team, not bring in ok cover or players who will 'do a job'.

Look forward to seeing how he gets on.

Better still, pick 5 and excel in them all.

so Japp prefers players who can play in mulitple positions but not specialised in any particular position. Now it makes
sense why sometimes players play what we consider out of position. Only one problem with that is I'm guessing that academy players are not taught to play like this so that why he brings these players in and the academy players are not considered. I can only guess he is better that what we have got but according to his stats he isn't no striker but sounds like he's a grafter like kermogant

there are plenty of players in the Academy who can play more than one position. Jack Stacey was a winger who played full back or wing back as well, several of the centre backs can play full back or midfield, Josh Barrett pops up as a winger, no 10, striker, Tyler Frost seems to play anywhere, Tom McIntyre plays fullback, centre back or midfield etc etc

Or JAAP signed him for one particular position and it just so happens he can play in others, which is a bonus.

Looking through Dutch stuff. He was a left winger. Jaap utilised him more as an attacking midfielder, occasionally as a defensive midfielder (where he did well) and a few times as a right wing back.

His main issue seems to be with his pace and playing at speed he often makes wrong decisions, whereas he excelled in the centre but was shunted back onto the wings under Bosz.

I'd guess he'll play in the centre (maybe where Williams was) but can be shifted around to left/right wing, CAM, CDM, or RWB if needed. Not a conventional striker really, but can play up top as part of a fluid lineup (same as Meite was billed).

Well, having players who can play multiple positions would fit the Dutch style of Total Football.

But obviously not to Japps standard or he wouldn't have bought him.

What makes you assume that ?
You are aware that signing one player doesn't mean you don't select anyone else !

Maybe by looking at the current squad and then looking at the U21s who have to fit is as well?

I'd agree that he looks like a good fit for the first team squad. In terms of youngsters the likes of a Frost and Holsgrove are a year or two too young, Josh Barrett is also only 19. My query was that you claimedthe youngsters are not up to standard, I think it 's more that the likely players in that attacking midfield role are too young as yet.

Hardly surprising that he like flexible players given that he grew up on 'total football'. To play that style you need players who can move around the park and cover any vacancies left as others move to use the ball.
