Moving up the coaching ladder, wonder if he would look at ambitions to manage us when Stam moves on ?

Brilliant. Should give him some one-to-one time with GMac and get him to run at players.

For those of us of a certain age the sight of Gilkesy flying down the left touchline by the south bank (always played better in the second half) circa 1993 (his best season) is the indelible memory of that era. Undoubtedly my favourite player at the time. For him to be appointed caretaker manager if and when the dutch gang move on inevitably at some point, would slightly ease the pain of Stams departure.

Can we expect now that all wingers will start to play like Gilksey i.e. lamp the ball towards the corner flag then do the full back in a straight race before delivering a pin point cross to their best mate in the stand behind the goal?

Gilkesy in one of my top 5 club legend players so got to be glad about this

Yes, but he's some sort of youth coach I believe.

Think he's the sort of liaison for players out on development loans. I'm sure that can't be full time though, so he'd get involved in training also.

I always like seeing former players involved beyond playing. Good move by the management to promote him.

Undoubtedly one of my favourite ever players. Am I right in saying he spent a couple of loan spells away from us? I've got this vague recollection of him on the bench in a televised ZDS trophy game. Might even have been the final. Back in the days when Forest seemed to win it all the time. Possibly spent time at Chelsea, too.

I'm reaching that age now when you're never quite sure if things actually happened, or your mind has randomly created it.

Was released by Leicester as a youngster in about 1984 I think. First time I saw him was in a friendly at Bracknell around that time and thought then he was just a little on the quick side of things.

Three loan spells First with some Finnish club in the mid 80s then two loan spells (with Chelsea and then Southampton) in the early 90s but they never came to anything for him.

Eventually left in 1996 I think and still managed to indirectly set up a win for Reading over his new club - Wolves - in THAT game.

Finished career at Millwall and Slough and since then has been coaching with Basingstoke and now with Reading the first team via a few years with the youngsters here.

One thing I can't recall though and that was whether he got a testimonial or not. Think he did but might be wrong as I know JM was trying to stamp them out at Reading in the 90s.
