Royal_jimmy I expect the women's team to be scaled back/scrapped now we've been relegated

I really hope you are wrong. It would be a very bad move and look for a club that claims to be fully inclusive and family oriented.

I was right about this. Very disappointing but not overly surprising they're going part time

You were right and the extent of the scaling back verges on being scrapped. Earlier this year, I believe Bowen said the owner was funding the women to significantly higher levels than any other Championship (not sure whether he meant men or women's Championship) club. That will no longer be the case and the women will again be left fighting against the odds in terms of funding, with an increasing number of teams in the Women's Championship boosting funding and going full-time. I fear that we will experience a similar slide to that endured by Watford after the two teams headed in opposite directions on the formation of WSL.

Pepe the Horseman STAR have come out and applauded the decision. Disgusting.

Applauded is a real exaggeration, we wanted the club to run within it's means, this is part of it, funding a full time women's team means it has to run at a significant loss, obviously pales in comparison to the men's team but the club has been able to make cutbacks to the women's team just as it has had to make cutbacks to the men's team.

But publically lambast a small price increase after a decade of no rises.

Clueless from STAR.

I'll certainly agree it is inconsistent.

Yes they don't seem to be thinking about things at all, some would say perhaps they are out of touch with the general fan base (which I thought they were meant to represent) which is reasonably supportive of both of these decisions given the current climate at the club.

Yeh I was joking. Twitter is obviously OUTRAGED though.

Presumably the outraged twitterati were regular attendees at the women's matches? They may not be going part time if they had more people watching their games and bringing in revenue on a match day.

Are there any full time teams in that division? The lack of attendance information doesn't hint at support at that level being great.

It would probably help if each team played more than about 10 home games a year.

Elm Park Kid It's been stated again and again and again - the club doesn't have a financial problem, it has a regulatory problem. The owners have plenty of money, we're just not allowed to spend it. One of the exceptions of that is the Women's team, where the rules let us spend whatever we want. I think it's a real shame that the owners have decided to cut back the relatively small amounts it's spending on them - it's a regressive stance in an era of growing interest in the women's team. And it has zero . . . zero impact on the men's team.

Well said.

That said, the WSL is just 12 teams. We've done well to compete for so long despite our resources (yes Dai's rich, but he can't compete with the Premier League heavy hitters). I'd like us to continue to have a full-time women's team that can compete with Brighton and Leicester, but modern football is fundamentally unsustainable. Perhaps it will be better in the long run to have one fewer vanity project, at least while attendances, revenue, and top flight places remain so limited.

Did nobody sit down with the team last season and say that if we were relegated then there was the risk we will have to go part time? Would that not have been incentive enough to have tried a little harder to get the results we needed to stay up?

It was always going to be hard for us to compete. Look at the WSL; it's the big 6, Everton, West Ham and Villa who are arguably the biggest 9 clubs in the country. And then Brighton and Leicester were immediately above us, and even they are PL on the men's side.

The WSL is still a start up product in its loss making phase, so only the biggest can bankroll that. When it was introduced, Doncaster were kicked out despite being a big historical player in women's football, because the they couldn't demonstrate having the funding required. And maybe it suits the FA too. Clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal and the Manchester sides can grow the game like Reading and Doncaster can't, and their investment basically made England's Euros win possible.

So it is a rational decision to stop trying on our side. That being said, if we wanted to stick our fingers up and keep mixing it with the big clubs, the Dais can afford it and it doesn't count towards FFP.

Official announcement here -
https://www.readingfc.co.uk/news/2023/j ... tures-new/

KELLY CHAMBERS SET TO LEAVE THE CLUB FOR PASTURES NEW
Reading Football Club can confirm that Kelly Chambers, Director of Women’s Football and First Team Manager of Reading FC Women, is set to depart the club.

Following the club’s decision earlier this month to reset, rebuild that branch of the club on a part-time basis with a focus on establishing a more sustainable model for Reading FC Women for the future, Kelly consulted with the club at the start of that process and made clear her intentions to now pursue new opportunities.

A player and a coach before becoming the manager and a valued and dedicated member of senior management within the structure of the club, Chambers has been a pioneer at the pinnacle of women’s sport, championing women’s football at every turn and standing strong at the very heart of its rapid growth.

Kelly took the Reading FC Women reins back in 2012 and guided them into the second tier with promotion that same year. Three years later, she was at the helm to mastermind a second promotion, this time taking the Royals into the Women’s Super League where they would remain for the next eight campaigns.

Locking horns with the elite for nearly a decade, Reading FC have been punching well above their weight under Chambers – competing with clubs with bigger budgets, broader resources and the financial backing of clubs with Premier League revenue streams.

And yet, in 2017-18 Chambers’ Royals finished fourth in the top tier – behind only Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City and ahead of both Everton and Liverpool in losing just four games all season.

The following season, she proved it was no flash in the pan campaign; Reading outshone both Merseyside clubs once more as well as the likes of Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham United to finish in fifth and reach the FA Cup semi-final along the way!

This season, competing for the first time within a division made up entirely of teams affiliated to Premier League clubs, the Royals suffered relegation after a final day defeat to champions Chelsea.

The part Kelly has played within the modern era of Reading Football Club should not be underestimated or understated, nor should her love for the game or her club.

Everyone would like to thank Kelly for her remarkable contribution to Reading Football Club, wish her the very best of luck in her future career and offer our very best wishes to her and her family as she prepares for the arrival of her second child in the coming weeks!

A role similar to the one Kelly is vacating will shortly be advertised as the club seek to appoint a brand new manager for Reading FC Women ahead of the start of the Championship season in August.

Gemma Evans off to Man Utd.
Chambers should have been sacked at least 4 months ago and the new manager might have played our best players like Evans !!!

Agree - Chambers is rightfully cut some slack due to her service to the club over the years but she was a contributory factor in relegation.

!3 senior players are to leave. They have a combined appearances of around 700, so that should ensure another relegation for the women! This, not so surprising news, is on the clubs official website.

Really shocking for me that she was Director of Women's Football as well as being manager, who exactly was holding her to account, especially when the team was just losing every game.
