MATCHWATCH : Barnsley (h) sponsored by freezing cold Tuesday night football

by Sutekh » 26 Nov 2017 14:13

When : Saturday 18th November, 3pm
Where : Madejski Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Game in hand time at last. 3 points here will see Reading climb TWO places and above QPR and Barnsley themselves into the heady heights of 16th place. A six goal win for the Royals would also see them motor past the mighty Brentford into 15th place. And who said the season's over?

Don't think I've ever seen good entertaining game with Barnsley though. They always seem to be dour miserable affairs that Reading struggle in and either end up losing or being frustrated into conceding another two points, and given the events of this season so far expectation is not high that this will be any different. However as it isn't being played on a Saturday there is a chance that Reading might actually see 3 points come their way from a home game.

Barnsley have only failed to score in one of their previous eight league games away from home and appear to be relatively free of injury and suspension worries with both Tom Bradshaw and ex Reading youth product (and now Barnsley captain) Angus Macdonald having returned to face Leeds.

Reading's injury problems are well known. Hopefully all who played against Sheffield came through OK although if there is a doubt to add to the list it may be Leandro Bacuna who looked to pick up a bit of an ankle knock in the second half though he did see the game out.

Referee

Because he's been told he has to referee this fixture until something entertaining happens, Lancashire's Darren Bond will again be in charge

Previous games

11 Feb 17 > Reading 0-0 Barnsley
13 Aug 16 > Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 Reading
14 Mar 2015 > Watford 4-1 Reading
30 Aug 2014 > Middlesbrough 0-1 Reading

Historically

Recently Barnsley have had an annoying habit of turning up, being dour, and going home with 3 points. In fact they've won 3 of their last 4 visits, a run that was only assuaged by last season's tediously dull 0-0.

Overall though this game is their 34th league trip to Reading and they've only won 6 of the previous 33 games in total compared to Reading's 17 victories. Of the 10 league draws in Reading, a whopping 8 of them have finished 0-0

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel to the Mad Stad
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use an iFollow subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Certainly has all the makings of a dour struggle against a team coming for a 0-0

Will prob drag my ars@ along anyway to suffer seeing us have 75% possession and 2 shots on target

Would go same team just to try to keep some consistency, but wouldn’t be upset to see Clement and Richards in for Kelly and Edwards

Edwards is a limited player but imo we’re a better team when he’s on the pitch, had he started against wolves I think we’d have won

Yeah he is useful. Just wonder in the circumstances we might need someone a bit more creative

It's Barnsley ffs, you have to be pretty pessimistic if you can't see how we can win this game. I'm not saying it's a sure thing but a Reading win will be the most expected result for this match.

I`m getting seriously worried about the kind of fans with forum attracts. Do you know we beat Derby a few games back, the same derby that have only lost once in their last 11 games, against us.
I`m not saying Barnsley will be easy, but coming out with statements like that you are just asking to be shot at.

Please just play the same XI and shape so the players can learn what to expect from each other.

No one played particularly badly against Weds. Just stop oxf*rd tinkering.

Was not looking to be shot at just my opinion. We at home we do not create enough are attacking midfielders are not natural finishers and are star striker is clearly not fit sorry for my pessimistic opinion but that is based on this seasons home performances .Sorry if i caused any offence .

I thought Barnsley played some really great football in the game v Leeds on Saturday, they were unlucky to lose 0-2, they won't be a pushover.

Definitely something to be said for that. The balance wasn't right but the lack of chemistry was the bigger problem and bringing someone in from the cold isn't going to solve that.

It will be far from easy if you look at their recent away record. a narrow defeat at Wolves followed by draws at SW and Norwich and wins at Millwall and Burton. they only failed to score in one away game, a 1-0 defeat at SU.
Anyone anticipating a easy game might get a rude wake up call tomorrow night.

He's wearing a Liverpool shirt, however it is very likely he is one of the many thousands that travel from much further afield than Merseyside to attend Liverpool home games.

QPR play Brentford tonight so, whatever happens, we will not be in 15th place tomorrow evening!

And, once again, we are meeting a club on a good run of form. Barnsley are unbeaten in their last 4 away games. Sheffield Wednesday were on a run of 5 unbeaten when we met them last Saturday; Bolton were on a run of 6 unbeaten when we played them; Wolves are Wolves; Derby were on a run of 7 unbeaten - so none of our recent fixtures have been easy.

Missed QPR playing last night

It finished 2-2 but Reading can still get above the fakes today and set themselves up for a chance of joining the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Fulham and Ipswich if a further win was then to be garnered at the weekend :o
