Low away attendances

by Sutekh » 23 Jan 2018 13:47

Just picking up on something touched on in the polices forum about low away attendances.

Anyone know what the lowest way attendance is to watch Reading in terms of Reading fans?

I know the Readings trip to Chester back in the early 90s attracted about 630 in total but presumably the Reading turn out would have been about average for the team at that time

The lowest I can think of was about 40 or so that turned up at Stockport one evening for a 5-1 stuffing under Mr Bullivant#s reign

But does anyone know more...

And let's exclude any games in the Associate Members Cup.

Went to that Chester game (played at Macclesfield) on a miserable evening. I would guess that there was less than forty Reading fans present. One of my most depressing nights following the club.

I remember us only taking around 80 or so to Middlesbrough in 2015/16 (the infamous Williams vs McShane match)

Was it as little as that??? I was there and it seemed like more to me. Would estimate 200-ish.

It might not have been that match... definitely remember taking less than 100 to a match around that time

Five. Yes that is how many went to Workington back in the sixes or seventies for a Friday night game. I can remember the names of two of them and have a fairly good guess at another one.
Edit:- and it was a league game.

Seem to remember being told of an occasion when one well known supporter turned up in splendid isolation and was deservedly given a lift back on the team coach :D

Frankly, given how things are right now, anyone who can be arsed to go deserves a medal

I recall being part of 150 odd at Swansea in an FA cup replay in 2005.

I remember a 1-1 draw from around then, a night game, when the coaches got stuck in really bad traffic on the M6. Coach 1 decided to turn round and come home, and the other coach, with far fewer fans on it, persevered, and didn't get there until about the 75th minute of the game.

There were hardly and fans on the away terrace, but quite a few went in the seats (I think it was raining), which were unsegregated*, so it would have been hard to spot the fans.

* Quite a few found they had sat in a season ticket holder's place, but hadn't noticed as the system at Crewe was that season ticket holders marked their place by putting a sticker on the seat.

Burnley away 2007/08 season on a Tuesday night.

Around 200 sitting on the cold wooden seats in the freezing cold.

4 of us made it through deep snow to Manchester in 1955 to see us lose to United ( 4-1 if I remember rightly) in a Cup replay travelling in an Austin A30 with side and rear windows completely frozen all the way. Home fans very tolerant of my youthful ranting. Think the Smith’s coach turned up midway through the second half as some blue and whites came onto the terraces, uncovered in those days. But playing on a snow covered pitch when they had to dig out the lines periodically took real men( and leather boots).
