Update from today's press conference

• Adrian Popa is available
• Leandro Bacuna has a sore ankle but should be fit
• Modou Barrow (ribs) and Yakou Meïté (groin) are still being assessed after picking up injuries on Tuesday
• Chris Gunter is close to fitness but won’t be ready this week
• Also too soon for Aluko
And, unsurprisingly, McCleary, Edwards, Obita, Harriott all still out.

Sounds like Popa May make the bench. PC seemed to suggest he wasn’t ‘match fit’

I thought it was Barrow who had hurt his groin and Meite his ribs ... ?

Medically they're more or less in the same place.

Harriott not too far off a return. Yay!

McCleary joined in a practice match yesterday and the next step will be to get him some game time in the U21s/23s, or whatever they're called, to build up some match fitness. Guess that means he could get an opportunity on the bench in early October if all goes well.

Obita has had a very serious knee injury and suffered a reaction in preseason. He's currently in the US working with a specialist in strengthening exercises. The hope/expectation is to be back training next month.

was the reaction just the previously mentioned knee 'clean up op' or was that something else? Was a little surprised to see him going to see another specialist this long into his recovery, but hopefully just to strengthen it up. Still be surprised to see him in the team this calendar year

Wonder what McCleary we will see back. He just didnt seem 'right' last season. Never seemed properly fit and was running weirdly

Ye, it's been pretty devastating watching his demise. From one of the best players in the division to a complete shadow of his former self. My suspicion is he will have to drop down to go back to Oxford United for a season and then hang 'em up.

Legend in my opinion though

+1. I would be challenged to name 5 better championship wingers than McCleary during his stint with us.

Yiadom booked.

Mannone injured in training yesterday. Believed a minor knock.
Meyler has a minor knee problem and should be back in contention next week.
Popa has an injured ankle from a week or so ago. He just rolled it so shouldn’t be out too long (not that he ever plays anyway)
Blackett was missing, presumed injured or ill, at the Preston game
Barrow believed to have missed Preston due to wife in labour.

So all in all not a bad international break for the club

Of the “long term” injuries

Edwards has an MCL problem and is probably a few weeks away from rejoining training
McCleary is back in training and getting game time with the U21/3s
Harriott too is back in training and getting game time with the U21/3s
Obita is back from the US and expected to be able to return to training in October
