Snowflake Royal Seems obvious he wanted to go to Brighton and is pissed off we didn't accept an offer.

 hardly a surprise surely. Pretty much what he did to get out of Leicester for first team football

If Reading have done their homework they’ll know exactly who they want for a replacement which just leaves the question of how much Brighton will have to cough up and whether Balcock is part of the deal or not.

Good luck to Liam, let’s just hope it’s sll sorted before the start of the season.

Certainly not a surprise, no.

We’re not flush with strikers so I hope Balcock does join or our chances next season will go down the pan.

Yep, agreed, he wanted out. Can’t really blame him for that, either.

I would say, however, that his decision also may have at least some bearing on what he thinks of the set up here and our prospects. Maybe he waited to see who we brought in this Summer before making this decision.

Furthermore, going to Brighton is no sure thing for him, given their current CBs, plus they are among the favorites to be relegated from PL this season.

Especially after that Ipswich shambles at the end of last season, let's face it, we've not massively improved with a lot of our signings. McNulty may provide a few more goals, don't see O'Shea providing a lot after back-to-back relegations, Yiadom looks like a good signing but don't think he's magnificent defensively, Walker is a backup. However, I'm beginning to warm to the signing of David Meyler, could be a key figure in our squad defensively and in terms of character. Still think we desperately need a central attacking midfielder, don't think just having Swift/Clement there will cut it. This is as well as a striker and perhaps a winger depending on Meite's main position this season as well as Harriott's fitness, would give Ilori one more year to prove himself. I just hope the new coaching staff have implemented a fresh philosophy. Would not blame Moore at all if he wants to go.

My Attempt

I think at least two of the sides coming down will be strong all season.
I think Wigan will be top half and might flirt with sixth.
I think Leeds will stop being a basket-case and stake its claim for the big time again. I suspect Forest's spending will get them top six at least.

I only see four relegation candidates, but of course one team will massively under-perform and another over-perform.
Ipswich might be the first, Bristol the latter.

I've also posted my best-worst position

01 01-02 Stoke
02 01-02 West Brom

03 03-07 Leeds
04 02-08 Forest
05 02-08 Boro
06 04-09 Derby

07 05-14 Norwich
08 06-10 Preston
09 06-12 Brentford
10 06-14 Wigan

11 06-18 Swansea
12 07-16 Millwall
13 09-18 Hull
14 08-16 Wednesday
15 09-17 Bristol
16 09-18 Reading
17 08-21 Blackburn
18 11-19 Ipswich
19 10-20 Villa
20 11-20 Sheffield Utd

21 18-22 QPR
22 20-23 Birmingham
23 20-24 Bolton
24 21-24 Rotherham

I totally do not believe Reading will be near relegation and if there are 1-2 surprise challengers for sixth, maybe, just maybe...

I think it all depends on how we start, get a win against Derby and the confidence levels will be sky high. Lose and it could set the tone of negativity for this year. A win would be huge for a positive vibe around the club which has been needed for a very long time. On paper we look a little stronger with Mcnulty, JDB, Baldock and Meite leading the line and I'm confident should we see the likes of Swift/Aluko turn up this year we will score considerably more than we did last year.

Generally speaking I think West Brom or Stoke will bounce straight back and I would expect to see one of the under performing sides of last year such as Sheff Wed or Norwich as a contender too. This season has the potential to produce a consecutive promotion side to the Premier League in either Blackburn or Wigan.

Realistically anywhere between 12th - 15th can be regarded as a great achievement for Reading FC.

Agree. We have two very tough games to start with, and COULD ship 6/7 goals even if we were half-decent when measured over the season

It would have been nice to have three or four easier games first.

But looking at the first six games (Bolton, Brum, Blackburn and Villa, none of whom are likely to be top eight teams) we could look solid enough at the end of the six games.

But an optimistic spin would be that even the top sides, sides that are clearly better, usually take a while to find their juggernaut form.

If you have to play auto or top six sides, best get the games in early when they are less perfect machines

From football365s championship review.

Elsewhere, Hull, Birmingham and Readingform a country-spanning trio of former Premier League sides where the pre-season mood feels distinctly gloomy after pretty ropey 2017/18 campaigns. Expect at least one of them to be in the top two come May, then.

I'll take bets none of those three make automatic.

One might scrape a PO place.

Certainly no hope of Birmingham doing it so it's up to us and Hull....

If any of us are top half it'll be a surprise let alone POs or auto.

I remember saying half way through the first game of the season that Leeds will win the division.

I'm so glad I was wrong. :D

Yep - I remember posting Leeds after 3 games and was worried 106 was under threat :D

Think they hammered Stoke and Derby first 2 games who were among the pre-season favourites
