Former Wales winger Jason Bowen has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

Bowen, 50, played for Swansea City, Birmingham City, Reading, Cardiff City and Newport County in an 18-year career which included two Wales caps.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise funds for Bowen's treatment.

A statement on the page said Bowen was diagnosed with the incurable disease in March 2021 after "feeling weakness and twitching in his arm".

"When we first discovered that Jason had MND tears were shed, anger expressed, and a feeling of total and utter despair set in," it said.

"However, despite such negative emotions and experiences, these past 18 months since diagnosis have also shown us the power of positivity, friendship, love and community as friends, family and colleagues have all pulled together to help.

"Jason's family's attitude is amazing. They are strong, loving and supportive. They are not giving up and looking for any treatments that will help Jason now and in the future."

The aim is to raise money to cover "ongoing medical costs" for Merthyr-born Bowen, who lives in Langstone, Newport.

A stylish winger who was a fan favourite at several clubs, Bowen began his career at Swansea in 1990.

He spent five years at Swansea, helping the club win the Autoglass Trophy in 1994, before joining Birmingham City.

He moved to Reading after a loan with Premier League Southampton, but soon returned to Wales, signing for Cardiff in 1999.

Bowen won three promotions - and was relegated once - during his time with the Bluebirds before joining Newport in 2004 and then finishing his career with Llanelli.

His made his Wales debut in 1994, against Estonia, with his second cap coming in a 7-1 loss to the Netherlands two years later.

Bowen's son Sam plays for Newport having come through Cardiff's academy, and he has two other children, Jaye and Theo.

Always thought he was a thoroughly decent player. Sadly the idiot Burns didn’t give him a chance and just froze him (and Andy Legg) out and they found themselves training with the youth players in an effort to get them out so “Virgil” could have a bit more money to overspend on mediocre (at best) dross.

Tough for him as that's relatively young these days. Still, a player that got to the PL after being released by us at 15 has definitely got the drive and determination to overcome setbacks, hope he thrives in whatever he chooses to do next.

A piece on what Bikey is up to now. Didn’t realise he seems to be Jose Gomes trusted man and goes everywhere he goes as a coach. But however currently out of work.

Don’t think it was picked up last year but former Reading player Sammy Chung died on 28 August 2022, he was 90 years old and one of the first (if not, the first) Anglo-Chinese players in the game in this country.

Think it was tbh.

Anyways…and of no particular interest to anybody, ex-Royal Rowan Liburd scored his first goal for Ramsgate Saturday. Only 30 years old , thought he was much older.

Remember we beat his Wolves side in the league cup late 70's (we were 4th tier, they were 1st) he was sadly sacked soon after

It's very sad as he always looked like he had the right combination of good passing ability and old-fashioned defensive qualities/physicality.

I think he was quite a humble lad as well, helping out his dad (?) at his market stall even when he was playing in the Prem. That may be slightly wrong but I recall reading something similar in an interview somewhere a few years ago.

He can probably look back and be happy with what he's achieved and hopefully he'll be successful in whatever he goes into next.

Quiz for naming the 179 players who played for us from summer 2010 to summer 2021. There is a mistake, a Portuguese goalkeeper is duplicated.

I remember someone posting a similar quiz for 2005-2015 or some such a few years ago, but this one is much harder because of all the forgettable journeymen and Academy players with one appearance we've had in this period.

168 is the score to beat... the most embarrassing player I missed was a certain super-sub striker. Also forgot an ex-Man City English midfielder and an ex-Liverpool Scottish midfielder, plus two players who are still at the club.

Didn't realise there was a time limit and got hooked trying to remember Mullins and Barrows names.

Disappointing and tired 80.

Saw Liburd play earlier this season. Based on that I’d say he’s probably found his level at Ramsgate.

yeah, only seemed to be a success at Billericay (the reason we signed him).
